A Piece of Something Hanging from the Bottom

Good Morning,

On my way to work this morning I was hearing a funny noise every time I went through a puddle of water. Then, when I arrived at work and was the only one pulling into the garage I heard the noise again. I parked the car and found this: (image attached) does anyone know that it is... I'm stopping by a repair shop before driving all the way home, but can someone give me a heads up on what it is? And if I should try to cut if off before I drive? It looks pretty mangled anyway.

From the looks/location of it, I think it is the plastic cover under the main cabin that protects fuel and emission components. Definitely replace/get it replaced as soon as you can.

EDIT: do you have a turbo/Ecoboost engine or the 3.5L engine? The turbo engines have an additional splash shield under the engine bay. Did you have an oil change done recently?

@akirby - I live in Seattle - so my drive to work was littered with massive water puddles on the road. I think it happened when I went through one of them at 4:30am this morning (it was dark and i didn't see it until i was in it). I'm heading to a repair shop just a few minutes from my work. Do you guys think it will be okay to drive it that far? I don't know how else to get it off, or protect it since I'm in a parking garage at work with no tools or anything.

I do not have the Ecoboost. I didn't have an oil change done recently - I had running boards installed (but the person who installed them assured me he didn't touch anything other than the frame to attached the boards). I also just bought the car... (I've only had it a few weeks).

If it is the engine splash shield, you COULD get away without one for a while, in theory. The Edge may not perform as well due to degraded aerodynamics and there may be cosmetic effects as well in the engine bay.

If it is the fuel/emission splash shield, you would be leaving those components open to damage, which would cost you far greater monies to repair and likely would not be covered under emissions warranty.

If the other half of the shield is still under the vehicle, you can put a strap from the front screw to the rear screw to hold the 2 halfs up. You might also be able to glue/sew/staple the 2 halves together. As far as I know, this piece is only for aerodynamics, i.e. reduce drag and/or wind noise. It covers the middle/side bottom of the Edge (under the right side front/rear passengers. I don't think the 2007-2010 Edge/MKX had it, couldn't find a part number.
