New Grille Solution!

Recommended Posts

I hate chrome. I hate chrome. I hate chrome.

The strip at the top of the grille irritates me. It's stupid. I've covered it in gloss black vinyl, and removed it. It didn't look right. I had planned to paint it, but getting paint to stick to chrome, (even chromed plastic,) is difficult. I didn't want it to all flake off later, especially on the front, where it's more susceptible to bugs and gravel.

Somebody at 3M must have heard my plea. They recently introduced a bunch of new films in the Scotchprint 1080 vehicle wrap line, and one of them is called "Gloss Black Metallic." The hue is ever so slightly off from Tuxedo black, but it's so damn close that virtually nobody would notice. I ordered some, but I threw the little sample piece on the grille and snapped some pictures for y'all.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else was interested.

Ummmm, this looks amazing! They didn't list prices that I saw on the site. What did you pay? I live in Germany so I can't just :shift: down the street to get some  How can I get my hands on some of this?

This place will sell small quantities and ships worldwide, according to their site. Hope that helps.

Id like to wrap my entire grill. I would really like to match it to my body color, but thats not in the cards at the moment. Did you remove your grill to wrap the inserts individually?

And I just realized that you have a sport lol. All you are wrapping is the top strip. So Ill figure out how to wrap the rest.

yeah I asked my dealer and they said it's probably because they couldn't get the tint for the tuxedo black due to the tsunami, which sucks. he said he would look into if they would swap it or not though.

i did get my vinyl in the mail though.

Okay, y'all have some patience with me. The car is still a little dirty. It didn't come out completely perfectly, but I think it's close enough that It'll work until I can move a little better from my surgery.

That looks awesome. I have a Red Limited and just put black wheels on it and am thinking about blacking out the rest of the chrome and I think this would be a good solution. How much of the 3M wrap did you have to buy to cover the entire grille?

that looks good.i'll know in a week or so if they'll swap my grille with a tuxedo black one. they said a local ford engineer was at the dealer last night and they gave him my VIN to see what the deal was.

Cool. Worst case, you could wrap the whole stock grille.

I only did the top chrome strip and above the headlights. Mine's a Sport, so it already had the black grille. If you're good with vinyl and don't have to redo a bunch of pieces, I'd guess that 3x5 would work fine, but measuring is up to you for your situation.

Sweet dingo! Will be doing mine just like yours. How durable is the film? Car wash safe?

Yep, it is. I actually went through a car wash about 30 minutes before those pictures. That's why it's not all the way clean, but doesn't look like complete ass, either. Remember that this stuff is made to wrap cars.
