warning lights - powertrain, ABS and traction control (same time)

Lately my '08 AWD Edge has been feeling like there's been some hesitation and hard shifts. Took it to the dealer, they can't find anything.

2 weeks later, i'm driving in a small town - slow speed, stop & go and suddenly the ABS, powertrain and traction control lights comes on all at the same time.

So I brake, and it feels like i'm braking on ice ( I was only going 10 miles an hour).

I stopped the car , turn it off, warning lights are still on. I drive half a mile, and the lights go off one by one.

Any idea?

UPDATE: :)

Just picked up my 08 Edge. Running great now!

Issue causing the problem (according to my local dealer who did the work): The tone ring on the left front wheel went bad. Unfortunately, in this case the entire front left drive shaft had to be replaced. The tone ring is wielded on to the shaft and the only way to replace it.

Consequently, the vibration issue I was also having was related to the shaft. Now that the shaft was replaced, it runs great.

Was able to solve two issues for the price of one. :clapping:

Hope this helps someone with a similar issue!

Greetings All,

Just puchased a 2008 Edge SEL, always had a mysterious vibration that everyone called ' tire noise ' and today, for the third time in the 2 months I have owned it, the ABS, Powertrain Malfunction & Traction Control warning lights illuminated at the same time.

My last vehicle was a LR Discovery 2, when similar warning lights illuminated, Land Rover owners called them " The Three Amigos "

So loose ABS sensor or/ and drive shaft Tone Ring.

Anything Else.

Thanks All

John, R.I.

I'm having a very similar issue on my '08 SEL AWD. I have 88,000 miles on it. All three lights starting coming on about a month and a half ago. Sometimes they flash quickly and randomly, sometimes they slowly blink and then they just stay on. Once in a while all three will go out and stay out for a few miles. When they come on it's like my car sputters briefly. It only does that when the lights first come on after being off for a little while/not driving my car. Sometimes the lights will blink when I'm on a bumpy road. I'm thinking bad censor or loose connection somewhere? Or could it be the tone ring? Help!

Unfortunately the tone rings are not "welded on" they are just pressed there-it's easy enough to take them off with a hammer and chisel. The problem is nobody manufactures the correct replacement size. The one on the Escape has same amount of teeth and is serviceable but the diameter is 1/4 too small so it won't fit an Edge cv shaft... believe me I tried ;)

That information is correct. I'm surprised Dorman doesn't make them.

For a temporary fix, realign the tone ring on the axle so that it runs directly under the sensor. Once it's perfectly aligned, run a bead of fresh cyanoacrylate around the ring where it contacts the axle. The surface tension will pull the glue into the gap and lock it tight. This will buy you at least a year until the tone ring cracks somewhere else. In any case, it will get you going until the shaft needs to be replaced.
