SYNC - Black Screen of Death ...

Recommended Posts

2012 Edge LTD, 33k KM, updated to V3.6.2, Sept 2013 - Jan 2014 it was working fine one day, and the next morning the Black Screen of Death. 24 hours later I removed the Neg cable from BATT, waited about 10 minutes and No change after reconnection. (Black screen, no speed control, no audio, no back-up camera, no Nav... ) Going to dealer on Monday to see if Service letter 12MO2 applies along with APIM module replacement?! Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi Kwmck,

This could be an APIM failure; keep me posted on how your dealership visit goes. Definitely check the fuse to make sure nothing was blown, in case you haven't already.

I just had mine go out on my 2012 and since it was a lease I had the dealer look at it. After having it most of yesterday they determined the unit needed to be ordered and replaced. It's such a pain because the radio, heating controls, back up camera and diagnostics are in that one unit.

I was at the dealer yesterday (2.5 hrs) and they have ordered a replacement APIM unit (24-48 hrs), and I then return for the R/R. My translation of the (in French) work order says that they determined a IDS Code U0253-IC, and the APIM did not pass the test ZZHR53,?! Hopefully I will have it back to 100% within days.

I really do like the vehicle. This is the only mechanical issue I have had since new.

I just had the black screen of death happen yesterday. They MFT system has been freezing and failing to shut down after exiting and locking the car. Once I even came outside after the car sat for 3 hours to find it still playing music in my driveway. Usually after 5-10 mins it would shut down. The freezes became more frequent until it just all out died on me. Now pulling the negative off the battery and fuse 29 don't restore it. Making an appointment at the dealership to get this resolved.

This just happened to us today! Went to the dealer......APIM issue. Get this! We have to go back (1.25 hrs each way) for them to remove it (while we wait) and send it to Ford to be repaired! Then we return (and wait) for the reinstall. It's -5* here, and that's warm compared to what its been. It really doesn't sound right to be w/o proper heat controls for (they say 5) I'm guessing 10 days. Did you others actually get a replacement unit? If so tomorrows am conversation w/the service writer won't br to pleasant.

A good day! After taking only 1:10 from drop-off to ready-to-go with 100% working Sync. The dealer replaced the APIM, and I have put it through about 10 complete cycles this morning while I was out and about! I had to re-sync(pair) my bluetooth iPhone 5s , and lost all of my MAP favourites. The dealer sends the old APIM back to FORD. All in all, the FORD team went the distance. I love my ride!

That's good for you! the dealer I'm dealing with still hasn't called back to tell me it's an R+R, claiming they need to "send" it out for repair. I did get the NO answer on a rental car.

Dealer is replacing the APIM but they are on backorder without an expected date. I am driving a 2011 MKX loaner but the radio has no sound from all sources and the windshield washer jets don't work. Its a nice car otherwise but I miss my edge for sure.

Hi 70amcpwr & Fingernip,

Keep me posted on how your repairs go. I'll provide additional support in the event anyone's issues persist beyond the APIM replacements.

Just got back from another unsuccessful visit. 2 1/2 hours and supposedly the installation of the new APIM wiped something else out "Collateral damage" they said. Failed state inspection (27k miles) because the rotors are so bad, rears have all ready been changed once. At least now they may warranty it a second time, before they sais NO! And they can't find the mysterious green/yellow fluid leak (Not antifreeze, that's redish). The leak starts @ the front and leaves a drip trail the full length, I think R134A dye but they still haven't figured it out. Going back a 3rd time next week for all of the same issues, this time we have to drop it and leave it. I'll have $250 into fuel by the end of that visit with having to use a chase vehicle! Not finding Ford Quality to be "JOB ONE"

70amcpwr,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop on your SYNC repairs. My Ford counterpart Todd is able to assist with other vehicle concerns not pertaining to SYNC. If your dealership is unable to provide further assistance with your other vehicle issues, you can PM him directly here: http://www.fordedgeforum.com/user/29146-fordservice/

Thanks for the support. It's really a shame that I had to call the dealerships service department where we used to live and search here to arm myself with enough information to have them make the repairs without keeping our vehicle there for weeks as some of the other horror stories have implied. We're usually very loyal to the dealerships that we deal with, but this is the second one that hasn't seem to want to "cover" something that is clearly a warranty issue. The real kicker for me is I grew up in a family owned AMC dealership (40 years) then continued to work in the auto industry for another 10+ years, then was in the marine/powersports business as a service manager than as an owner for 13 years. I know how important repeat customers are, don't they?

Here is my update.

Yesterday I finally was able to pick up my car. Turns out it wasn't the APIM module that was on backorder. It was actually a high pressure power steering line that they noticed a small leak on. It came in on Monday and they installed it during a snow storm on Tuesday. Also they replaced the lift gate struts and performed a TSB to attempt to fix the transmission "bang" problem that I had been experiencing. In all I had a great experience with them and it all cost me $0 out of pocket.. even with a synthetic oil change with a conventional oil change coupon. I enjoyed the MKX loaner car and was spoiled by the remote start and heated steering wheel but I really missed my Edge. Oddly my Edge has a much smoother and quieter ride, not to mention more comfortable seats.

Fingernip,

I'm glad to hear that you had such a positive experience. If something else pops up, you know where to find me. ;)
