Should my spare tire have a material type cover over it?

Recommended Posts

Bought a new 14 Edge limited a couple weeks ago. I noticed on You Tube videos when people lift the back carpet up to look at the spare tire area, the spare tire has a material type cover on it. Mine does not have this, did I get jipped? I actually put an old towel over mine so the tire does no put black marks on my cargo cover which I store there. This factory looking cover looks much better.

FWIW I do have the optional 20" wheels, and the spare is a T165/80D17. The Edges in the videos all seemed to have the standard 18' wheels, but I could not see the spare as they were covered.

I have a 2013 Edge Limited purchased new here in Texas. On my window sticker under standard equipment included at no extra cost is listed Cargo Management System. Here are two pictures of the spare tire cover (factory 20" wheels, smaller spare) and the back side with the part number. The cover appears to be almost a hard fiber piece covered with a short nap cloth.

Here is a topic I found doing a search on the forum which also explains the Cargo Management System with additional pictures. May have been an option on other models, but like I said, it was standard on my Edge Limited.

The link is from 2007 so the option for it may have changed, but it looks very similar to what I have. Mine has more "pockets" or dividers in the frame around the spare for smaller items to be stored, instead of the two big areas like those pictures show.

You also asked a question about the SoundScreen glass. Did you see my other reply and did you find it?

Very good info and thank you so much for the pics. That is definately the cover I saw in the videos.

It has me confused though. It would appear that the cover might be included with the Cargo Management System. Here is what I do know:

- I looked over my window sticker and nowhere under standard equipment or options does it say anything about my Edge Limited having the Cargo Managment System. That's bad.

- In the Ford of Canada website where I printed off all the features of the "Limited" model, it shows Rear Cargo Managment System as Standard (not optional like some other items). That's good.

- In the sales brochure from the dealership it says under available packages " Cargo Accessories package includes cargo cover, cargo area protector and rear bumper protector." I don't think I have any of those. That's bad.

- In my trunk surrounding the spare tire is the surrounding plastic tray to store items. Looks similar to the one in the pic of the link you provided. However near the tailgate I think mine has some smaller compartments. I'm not sure if this is whats called the Cargo managment System or not, but I do have the storage all around my spare tire. So maybe that's good?

Anyway it appears I have conflicting info so I will talk to my salesman, maybe he can clarify this for me. It's one of those small details that most would not pay attention too, however I'm a detail guy. Also if the parts guy priced it out correctly this cover is about $250 and would need to be ordered. The parts guy said with my VIN number he can usually tell if something should have been included with my vehicle, but for whatever reason he could tell tell for sure with this.

Yes, you were correct I do have the glass as you outlined. Thx

That package is completely different than the cargo management package, and is an extra cost option.

Yes, that is the cargo management package, but it should also include the spare tire cover like I posted a picture of. One of two things come to mind. Either the spare tire cover was deleted as part of the 2014 package, or yours is missing. Here is a picture of my window sticker showing the package listed as standard under the Interior specs.

Ok that makes sense that I don't have the Cargo Accessories package, now I need to find out if I do have the Cargo Managment Package and if yes, was it supposed to include the cover over the spare.

Again my window sticker makes no mention of Cargo MGMT System either standard or optional, but I obviously have the storage bins around my spare.

It's interesting to look at your window sticker compared to mine, as they differ quite a bit with the info on them (although very similar vehicles). I'm not sure if it's a 2013 vs. 2014 or a Canadian destined car vs. USA destined car, and I believe they were all built at the same plant in Oakville Ontario.

To give you some examples your sticker shows standard items such as Auto headlamps, rear spoiler, dual exhaust tips, 60/40 rear bench, tilt and telescopic, ambient lighting, dual illum vanity mirrors, and 1 touch drivers window. Mine too has all these items, but makes no mention of it on my list of standard equipment.

Now if we look at your optional equipment, yours show HID as part of Group 301A, mine shows it down under the optional equipment list even though I also have Group 301A. My 301A includes the BLISS, and your 301A does not and shows it with the vision package under optional equipment. I also have the vision package, but it's listed with my Group 301A. Confused yet? LOL

Ahhh the intricacies of the window stickers and packages...

I don't even know if my salesman will know if I should have got that cover or not? If the parts guy is correct, it's a $250 cover (which is crazy). I certainly don't want to pay for that if I should have gotten one with the car. Will let you know when I find out more.

Window sticker content is controlled by the regional marketing groups. So Ford of Canada decides what goes on the window sticker of a Canadian car and Ford US decides what goes on the US cars. So it won't be the same.

Makes sense, I've seen it many times including my 45 year old muscle cars.
