I have allways had our cars undercoated with the Ziebart system, but I have rust on some of the frame and suspension on my F150 where the undercoating cracked, so I was thinking of going with the guy that uses that greasy cosmoline undercoating because it seems to never harden and crack but it does sometimes drip in the summer for a few years. 07 MKX Posted November 3, 2007 Report Share Posted November 3, 2007 I did. I had the complete Ziebart package. Remember it's mainly marketing and way over priced, but that's how business is. I went with the sound package/window tint too. That's suppose to be an extra thick coat of undercoating. When I got home and took a look under it, I saw area's where they missed. Well for $800, it wasn't acceptable so back to the shop. After he hemmed and hawed to me about it, he caved and had it put back on the lift and the bottom re-shot while I watched this time. As for Diamond Gloss, I wouldn't do that again. NO one makes a product that is better than anyone Else's, I bought this JEFFS Werkstatt , Extra Prime, extra this and that, and one of the packages. Used the prime at about 1 oz. per treatment. Enough for 8 years/twice a year. About $100 worth, and was tickled pink over it, extremely happy. I just looked under another vehicle I own that I had undercoated 8 years ago, and never went back, man that's a lot of Rust. I will try to keep this undercoat warranty in effect. I've gone anal on keeping mine clean now. California car duster while it sits parked in the garage, Bugs wiped off the front after each run. Rain treatment for the window. etc etc. It may only be a Lincoln, but I'm very proud of it. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
iceman33 Posted November 3, 2007 Report Share Posted November 3, 2007 Living in Canada, an undercoat is a MUST....The humidity, Salt and Calcium will do a job to the undercarriage or where ever there is metal it can come in contact with. Oil based undercoating seems to be the best for us up North. Of course, this is a procedure that needs to be done on an annual basis - typically in the Fall, if you wish to keep the rust away. Does it leak after the procedure, Yes..for a day or two. I've done this to several of my vehicles and I have been extremely satisfied. Furthermore, because of the oil coating, it also facilitates the removal of nuts and bolts that would otherwise shear or break when removing them because of rust. Iceman33 what type of oil based undercoating are you refering to? In the old days I sprayed used motor oil under my cars and even added a cup of karosine to my wash bucket, I remember some very clean old cars from the 50's and 60's that were taken care of this way and they looked really good. CorporateEdge Posted November 4, 2007 Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 One of the more popular ones in Ontario is the "Krown" type of oil spray product. Don't know what it is exactly other than a more viscous type of oil treatment. We had our van done 5 years ago and every year since ($100.00/year) and its is pristine even when up on the lift. The spray stuff seems to get in all the nooks and crannys (Canadian expression?) better than the heavier "wax" or parafin type treatments. Ours drips really heavy for a day afte the treatment (park it on the street) and then its not to bad. If you have to put in the garage you can usually pick up so rolled cardboard that you lay out over the garage floor for 2-3 days to keep everything nice and clean. I wont be treating the new Edge as its a company car and gone in 3 years so there is no point in spending my own cash. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
iceman33 Posted November 4, 2007 Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 Krown is popular up here in Canada...However, I use a local chain in Quebec called "Metropolitan Rustproofing" --> http://www.antirouille.com/en/ Their product is Mineral Oil based with some additives...I service all of my vehicles annually (in the Fall) for about $80 and I have been extremely satisfied. I also own a 1997 Pathfinder that has been serviced annually - 10 years, and there is virtually NO rust under the carriage. My doors are like new (typically here is where the rust is more noticeable). And tks to this procedure, removing bolts, screws, etc..is a piece of cake.. You have to keep in mind that in Quebec, the city and transport ministry ENJOY using SALT/CALCIUM on the roads like there is no tomorrow. What I also do prior to "shooting" my cars with oil, is that I use a Electric Pressure Washer to remove any soil/dirt etc..from the bottom of the car, around the fenders, bumpers, etc..I make sure that the surface is clean, wait a day or two to ensure it is properly dry, and then "shoot" it with Oil.
