2011 Sport Edge Rims leaking, will not warranty

Let me vent, please.

 

My 2011 Sport has leaking wheels. When first purchased the wheels all leaked about 2 pounds per week. I didn't know about the Ford issue with these wheels so it never occurred to me that it would be a warranty item. I took it to Discount Tire and they checked the tires for leaks. They rebuilt the tire pressure sensors and reinstalled the wheels. Eventually the leak got worse and I soaped them up myself and found the bead leaking. I looked online and found the Ford issued TSB for fixing this leak. Here is where my gripe lies.

 

I took the vehicle in under warranty and explained my problem and showed them the TSB. They took my vehicle in and checked it out. They said they couldn't find anything in my tires and to take my car home. I mentioned the TSB again and they acted like they had never heard of such a thing. They agreed to set up another appointment to do the TSB. The TSB was performed and I was back on my way. The tires continued to leak an average of 1 pound a week. They agree to take the car back (now out of warranty for time, still under on miles) since it was the same problem. They perform the TSB and now one wheel leaks 3 pounds and another leaks 8 pounds per week. (after a two week period). They set another appointment and the car was dropped off. They called my wife the following day and let her know they didn't even look at the car. They told her they were being nice last time, with the car being out of warranty, and now the only fix they could do was for me to purchase new tires and they would perform the TSB on them for $350.

 

So... am I out of gas? The vehicle was diagnosed with leaking wheels under warranty. They just pushed me off until the warranty was out of time and now the the tires have to be aired up twice a week.

 

P.S. To top things off, my car has a dash camera. During the second TSB the technician took the Edge out a 40mph rough back road running over 80mph. He didn't take any ditches, or the like, but it seemed somewhat crappy and rough on the car. (just venting)

Just for fun, while waiting on any kind of response from anybody... here is a link to the video. Nothing dramatic. 85mph in a 45 zone on a crappy road at the 5 minute mark and cranking out the stereo, distorting the speakers at the 6 minute mark. BTW - Added another 7 pounds of air to the really leaky rim today. :cry:

Maddening problem! If the TSB was performed while the Edge was under the B2B warranty, I don't think you get a "normal" warranty to go with the service. However, if you actually PAY for the service, then a warranty (2 years?) applies. Hopefully they did clean off any rust and use the newest bead sealant on the wheels. New tires may indeed help resolve the issue. Not nice of the dealer to renege on their word.

 

You can A. go to another dealer, explain the history and try your luck, and/or B. call up Ford National Customer Service to assist/mediate. You could also find a Lincoln dealer or call Lincoln Customer Service instead. Some people have had better luck going that route. But I'd try the Ford lines first. We also have a Ford rep on our forum, Tricia. You can try PM'ing her for help.

 

Very nice quality, video, BTW, interesting watch. Who really knows what techs do with our vehicles once we leave them at the shop, right?

Yes, the TSB was performed under the B2B warranty, but the TSB did not fix the leaking wheel issue... so I took it as pushing the problem off till the warranty was expired. I guess I'll go with "B", do you happen to know a "good" number to call? Also, I PM'd the Ford rep on here and haven't heard back, yet.

Generally speaking, if you take a vehicle in for a repair during the warranty period and the problem is not resolved, it is still a warrantied problem. It's no different than if you took it in for something like a power window not working... if you first took it in during the warranty period but it wasn't fixed, the fact that the warranty expired in the meantime does not mean they aren't obligated to finish the repair under the original warranty.

 

The question comes in how the original work orders were worded. If the work order says something like "wheels leaking" then they haven't fixed the original problem and it's still a warranty issue. On the other hand, if you told them "perform TSB #xxxx" then you're probably out of luck because they did that and the fact that it didn't solve the underlying problem is not their concern.

 

If the dealer is unwilling to assist then you should escalate to Ford customer service. Make sure you have copies of all work orders showing what was done.

Well... I at least have a case number. They mentioned applying for Ford financial assistance with the problem. I don't exactly know what that means, but at least it's a step toward giving the air compressor a rest.

The description of the TSB is to stop the wheels from leaking air. You don't perform this TSB for TSB's stake. I understand what you are saying, but that seems a little underhanded if that is how it's interpreted. I do thank you for your take on this... and the advice. (you too, WWWPerfA_ZN0W) :worship:

Well... the case number got me nowhere. Set up an appointment at the dealership through the Ford number and the local dealership said I didn't have an appointment. Wouldn't set one up either. So, called Ford back and asked to change dealerships. Said this case number was tied to this particular dealership and I couldn't use another dealership until they at least saw the car. Called the local dealership and was told they would have to look in to it and they would call back. No callback after one week so I did what they obviously wanted me to do from the get go. I gave up.

I ultimately ended up buying 4 new tires off of Amazon (Nankang SP-5 Radial Tire - 265/40R22 106V) for $135 a piece. I had Discount tire dismount my factory tires and boy the rims were nasty looking. They had a white and green (from the slime Ford put on) powder and splotches along with rubber (maybe the stuff from the second TSB?) all around the bead of the rim. I took the rims home and cleaned the beads. It took a LOT of elbow grease to polish them up. At the suggestion of a tire guy, I then taped the rims off with masking tape and painted the bead area with a spray can of self etching primer. I was told this will hopefully slow down the oxidizing of the aluminum. I then took them back to Discount and told them to try and not scar the bead areas with any tools and had the new tires mounted. I then purged/vacuumed and ultimately filled the tires with nitrogen to try and keep the moisture out.

 

I did this on September 30, 2014 and the tire pressure has not wavered a single PSI as of March 12, 2015.

 

This could have been done without new tires, but I didn't want the expense of the mounting/balancing, etc. on tires that I would have to turn around and replace in another 10k miles. Also, fixing this problem without Ford's help figured out cheaper than a divorce. :)

 

BTW - I could tell the TSB's had been done incorrectly. There was still Slime left over in the bead from the first attempt. If the tires had been dismounted and cleaned as instructed, there would have been a chance that the TSB would have corrected the problem.

 

I chose Ford for my wife's SUV due to their choice made on the government bailout. My money is small and I'm only one person, but it means something to me. I recently needed a new work car and wanted a Fiesta. Due to this issue I purchased a new Toyota Prius C to drive to work.

The dealer refused to set up an appointment for you? I can't say I'm really surprised considering my own experience with a Ford dealer but I am dismayed at how blatant their lack of service became. I agree with WWWPerfA_ZN0W... you really need to make sure Ford is made aware of this failure.

 

On a side note, many people seem to want to cannonize Ford for not taking bailout money. In point of fact, they were just lucky - they had refinanced their major debt just months before the bottom fell out of the economy so they didn't need the money right then. If they hadn't just completed that refinancing, they would have been in line just like the others. There was no nobility or especially good planning involved... they just had lucky timing.

Horse hockey. The financing was just one piece that was needed to finance the plan. They came up with a plan to restructure the business and used the loans to finance it. That was not luck - far from it. Had they not changed their business model then the loan would not have helped.

 

This is such an urban myth that somehow the only reason GM went bankrupt is they weren't as lucky as Ford - nothing could be further from the truth. Ford made changes - GM didn't. Had GM gotten the same loan that Ford did - they would have still gone bankrupt because they were not changing their business model until BK forced it.

Glad to hear you found a DIY solution, too bad the dealerships didn't deliver. Definitely provide feedback to Tricia/Meagan at FordService so this experience goes on record.

I didn't say the business decisions they made were lucky... far from it. What I said was the timing was lucky.

 

I guess you could say they were lucky they didn't wait longer or it would not have worked. But it was still a calculated and well executed plan. As opposed to GM who had no such plan.

 

I hear people defending GM and saying that the only reason they went BK and not Ford was that Ford was lucky and that's simply not the case at all.

Done, minus the mileage. Did you want current mileage, mileage when ignored or mileage when the first TSB was performed? Hopefully the last two instances are in the computer system.

No, not canonizing. :) Whether they made good decisions or they hit the lottery, I was looking at the ends. I'm a red belt conservative and make what some may consider "irrational" decisions on trifling details. I still refuse to go to a local movie theater that chose to file bankruptcy at the completion of construction resulting in the local contractors not getting paid. The theater was bought out by another company (his brother's) while his company purchased another new construction theater (his brother's) that filed bankruptcy in a neighboring town. Were these brothers "lucky" saving millions or smart business men and making the system work for them? I don't know, but I'll mold my impression on the ends. :victory:
