Camshaft Posted October 8, 2014 Report Share Posted October 8, 2014 Hi, I just bought a used edge. 2008 Limited, AWD I am a mechanic. I took the word of the dealer that they did the used car inspection, as it claimed. But when I brought it home and had a look over it, I found the PTU leaking fairly well. It was mostly ATF, but still wet all the way around, which suggested all seals. The Trans fluid was bang on the mark, same with the PTU. I called the sales person I had been dealing with, they said no problem. The next week I brought it in and had them look at it. They will be replace both the transaxle/ptu thru-shaft seals, and the output seal. I will update you guys in a while to see if it finally fixes it. From what I understand, no one replaces their PTU oil, so it gums up, clogs the breather, pukes out the seals, then fries the gears. So all who complain that they should file a class action lawsuit, get your S**T together and check your fluids. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BTW, Ford claims lifetime for the PTU fluid (i.e., no need to change), so can't blame owners for not thinking about it like a regular maintenance item. Should they not trust the mfr? Oh by the way, don't immerse the PTU in water either coz then you have to replace the PTU. As a fix, Ford provides a vent replacement that runs up into the engine compartment. Hmm, should have been like that from factory? Sorry, designs are not flawless. The consumer has a right to have their complaints addressed. brantlyj Posted October 9, 2014 Report Share Posted October 9, 2014 your statement to get our s**t together is pretty ignorant. Ford does not provide a way to drain the fluid. The PTU is not a serviceable unit. If you take it to the dealer and ask for a fluid change they will refuse and inform you it is lubed for life. This is a well documented issue. I even found a TSB that Ford offers a PTU replacement unit with a drain and a 100,000 mile extended warranty for the Middle East. While that has not been extended to the States is beyond me. It has to be changed at some point, it can only absorb so many contaminates before the lubricity factor is null. You can easily suck it out with a 20$ oil pump. Most rear differentials don't have drains, does that mean you wouldn't change it if the dealer said you didn't have to? Just use some common sense! As I type, my Ford dealer is working to repair a gear oil leak from the PTU (Power Transfer Unit). From the blogs it appears this has been a problem since 2007. Wonder why Ford can't seem to come up with a fix that at least gets them 100,000 miles? All I have read says it occurs and reoccurs every 30,000 to 35,000 miles. Before I noticed, we tracked the gear lube from the driveway to the living room carpet, stained for good. The bigger worry is the damage that may have been done to the PTU for lack of lubrication. Ford needs to get their stuff together (by the way, the dealership performs maintenance as needed, so not sure why people posted that all fluids need to be changed because I'm sure the dealership hasn't change mine!) I did love the vehicle until now when Ford obviously can't fix my issue on their vehicle. Posted this earlier to another PTU issue: Have a 2013 AWD Edge with around 45K. PTU needs to be replaced; however, Ford isn't getting replacement to the dealership (and no estimated time of shipment either). Heard another dealership has been waiting a month and a half to replace a PTU on one of their customer's vehicles. Purchasing this vehicle brand new, maintenance up to date, mostly highway driving, and now dealership has it for 2 weeks already and they're waiting on shipment from Ford - needless to say, I'm not a happy first-time Ford owner. Probably won't purchase another one due to Ford's delay in being able to send PTU replacement. I live in Wisconsin, drive a considerable distance to work, and prefer the AWD. Awful time of year for Ford to not be able to even estimate when the replacement will be delivered. Anyone have thoughts on how to handle from here?
