All-new 2015 Edge using the old MFT hardware/software?

Ford promises that the next-generation, non-Microsoft Sync interface is on the way but that it wonā€™t be ready by the time that the Edge hits the market. The good news (or bad news, depending on how well it works) is that the redesigned interface can be loaded into the Edge at any point once the new software is ready.

Nothing in the order guide from what I remember. But there is time to update it. It's possible they're still using MFT especially if they weren't sure the new stuff would be ready. Given the MFT edge fiasco in 2010 I can't blame them for playing it safe with the 2015.

Ā

It's also possible they're using the new hardware with the old MFT in which case it could be upgraded.

Ā

I'm sure we'll get more info at the Detroit auto show.

Also read this:

Sync 3 will be available next year on Model Year 2016 cars, though Ford spokesman Alan Hall could not say what percentage of cars will still have the old touch screens and which will have the new ones.

Because the new touchscreens will include new hardware, owners of the current Sync with MyFord Touch system will not be able to upgrade to Sync 3.

Found this article:

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/195801-ford-sync-3-simplifies-the-interface-again-ditches-microsoft-for-blackberrys-qnx

Ā

In the fist paragraph, it stated "Announced today, it will ship first on an unnamed Ford model in 2015 with the entire Ford and Lincoln line shifted over by 2016."

Ā

Any chance that unnamed Ford Model is the 2015 Edge?

Ā

Nope, it's the Explorer.

I saw a CNet update last week stating MS Sync was being replaced with Blackberry software: http://www.cnet.com/news/ford-sync-3-dumps-microsoft-for-blackberry/ so many articles stating the current sync as we know it will be history.

Ā

Already announced. It's based on QNX which is owned by Blackberry now but it has nothing to do with Blackberry devices.

Ā

Current Sync and MFT aren't history - they're just replaced with a new version in new vehicles. The old ones will continue to work and hopefully we'll see at least one more round of bug fixes for older sync and MFT.

2015 Edge concept had a 10" touch screen and the 2014 and 2015 has an 8" touch screen.

Ā

Given: "Sync 3 will be available next year on Model Year 2016 cars, though Ford spokesman Alan Hall could not say what percentage of cars will still have the old touch screens and which will have the new ones.

I wonder if the new touch screens will be 10" or 8*. My guess is 10" but my predictions thus far hasn't been too accurate.

If I get the 2015 Edge now, will it update to Sync 3? I ask because I know initially it will ship with the current gen Sync. I've heard you will be able to upgrade, but is there confirmation on this? Or should I wait before buying?

No, it cannot be upgraded to Sync 3. If you want Sync 3 you will have to wait for the 2016 Edge or the 2016 Lincoln MKX.

I only read in 1 review that it might be upgradeable, but, Ford was clear when Sync3 was announced that older vehicles will not be upgraded due to hardware differences. So unless you get a clear confirmation otherwise, you should expect to remain on the same Sync version that comes with your vehicle.

The review was from Car & Driver (http://www.caranddriver.com/ford/edge):
