2012 Edge EcoBoost loosing power

I have a 2012 Ford Edge, SEL trim with 2.0L EcoBoost. Actually it is my wife's daily driver. Ever since we purchased the vehicle brand new almost 3 years ago we have had intermittent problems with the check engine light coming on as well as the wrench light for the power train. The engine sputters and loses power and it makes it very difficult to drive since this usually happens at highway speeds. Typically we can pull over and turn the engine off and after allowing it to sit for a while, we can turn it back on and only the check engine light remains on (usually for the next so many engine cycles till it resets). Today it happened to my wife and the traction control light came on and warned her that it was shutting off (this also happened to me while we were on vacation back in July) but this time it caused the car to jerk and my wife almost go off the road. Also this time the power train light did not go off after sitting for several hours. We have it at the dealership right now but have had it in there before for this same issue and they just told us the vehicle will not allow anything bad to happen and will shut off before major damage is done. I find this hard to believe. I am wondering if anyone else has this same issue? Thanks

Mine did this about three months ago and mine turned out to be a bad fuel pump. Thankfully covered under warranty. I didn't get the wrench or the traction control light but I also didn't drive it more than 3 miles after the loss of power and the check engine light on. I had it towed to the dealer asap. I hope that it is something simple for you.
