Parking Assist Issue

Dropping off my Edge tonight so they can look at my parking assist sensors. Even though the sensors are completely clear I am getting a "Check Parking Assist" warning on my display. I can press reset and it goes away until I place it in reverse again.

Anyone else experience this?? I will update this when they give me an answer.

Other than that, still loving my Edge....I have had it since March 2007 and have about 16,000 miles on it.

Try turning the park assist off on the DIC then back on to see if that will re-set it. Have no idea if that will work but is worth a try.

Thanks Hardhawk!

I just heard back a few minutes ago fomr the dealership and it was a bad sensor that they had to replace. Obviously, only being 9 months old it was covered by the warrenty.

My Son-in-Law, a police officer, was trying out the parking assist. I had not used it before. He read and followed the instructions. He is providing a more detailed report in the next day or so but the vehicle started to back up into the space, steered appropriately and then suddenly accelerated into the vehicle to the rear. The warning sensor sounded but only after contact. No real damage as it was a light bump. However it is disturbing to think what would have happened had a pedestrian been between the vehicles. Does this incident need to be recorded somewhere or documented with Ford Safety?

Yes, the driver should, as in normal driving control the throttle. The driver states that at the time his foot was removed from the pedal and poised over the brake. Not enough time to apply the brake. The acceleration was noticeable by my wife and daughter as passengers.

That is normal behavior in Fords AFAIK.

I once let a friend try the auto parking in my 2014 Escape and the car picked up super speed when backing up.

I had to yell at him to hit the brakes.

For me personally, it was never a problem since keeping my foot near the brake comes very naturally to me.

But Ford needs to fix it so that car doesnt move at all till the driver presses gas pedal.

So basically, Gas-to-move instead of Superfast-till-you-brake will be a saner approach.

I'm not sure if forcing the gas to move approach is the way to go either. I've never used a park assist feature, to me it still falls in the "gimmicky" type feature. If the car came with it fine, but I know how to park and wouldn't pay for it.

That being said, you really shouldn't be having to use the accelerator to park. Unless you are an incline, that type of maneuvering should be done with simple brake pedal manipulation alone. Driving with someone who stomps the gas to pull in a parking spot, pull out of one, or simply in reverse to me is quite frightening.

Used to drive commercially and been through many safety programs. You would be shocked at the amount of accidents caused by simply being in reverse.

One of the many rules I've applied to my daily driving now , is "Back before Stopping" or leave yourself an out. I back into a spot rather than pull in and back out when I'm leaving.

The information around you is still fresh when this is done. You've literally just arrived and scanned the area for pedestrians / vehicles. Instead of what many people do when they go to leave which is walk directly to driver door get in and back out. Never checking if something is behind them, on the passenger side, under the wheels etc

Sorry for the rant, but I'm not a huge fan of this system and to hear people wanting to accelerate to assist sounds like a recipe for disaster to me

The idea was "gas-to-move" not "gas-to-speed". A driver who cant tell/control the difference between the two is a disaster anyways with or without auto parking.

I also thought the autoparking was a gimmick feature initially but it does help people in areas where you rarely have to parallel park and thus dont get to practice it manually much.

To me "gas to move" shouldn't be a thing. It's release brake to move and gas to accelerate.

Regardless I'd have to assume the amount of accidents with these systems would increase ten fold if suddenly you had to work your gas pedal to operate it. Think of the amount of "person drives car through store window" stories you hear about every year. again anytime you are in a tight maneuvering situation I firmly believe the last thing your foot should be touching is the gas pedal. Unless it's an extreme slope or the wheels are stuck type of situation.

never had any issues with park assist. YOU NEVER NEED TO PRESS THE GAS! You control the speed with the brake. I've used park assist probably 200 times in almost a year.

Right, that's what I was saying a few posts up someone was saying they should make it so that hitting the accelerator begins the process. To which I said that would be an awful idea.

luxpow, this would be my 4th Ford I have owned with park assist and I have never had any problems with it. I like how it works and thus will say that I prefer it the way it is. I have had it on a Fusion Hybrid, Escape V6 AWD, Lincoln MKT, and currently my Edge Sport. I use it more to show it off to passengers if anything as I come from a generation that actually knows how to park a car.
