AZDiddy Posted April 17, 2015 Report Share Posted April 17, 2015 I have only had the Edge (2013) for about 3 months and I have been trying to get an understanding of how far I can go on a tank of gas. So, I was down to zero miles to empty. But when I filled up this morning it took over 20 gallons. Is my gas station ripping me off or is that possible? akirby Posted April 17, 2015 Report Share Posted April 17, 2015 If you filled it up at 0 miles to empty (and you didn't drive it much past that) then the most it should have held would have been around 16.5 gallons - maybe 17. But I don't see how you could get 20 in there unless it was leaking. Definitely suspcious, but I'd wait until the next tank (and try a different station). macbwt Posted April 18, 2015 Report Share Posted April 18, 2015 I have on many occasions put nearly or just a bit over 21 gallons of gas in my tank and have the receipts to prove it. I have asked this question many times with no answer as to why? Ford must of misspelled the amount the tank holds and I have no lights to indicated codes nor do I have codes with the short exception of a gas cap light that has displayed but is off now. I know in Iowa the pumps are certified and tested to display correct measurements and the amount of Octane dispensed so the only point is Ford is not stating capacity correctly. Keep in mind going really low on fuel can damage the fuel pump. Sometimes I forget or a fuel station is not too close so I have to push it. I will also note I have never ran out of gas. I’m not trying to be too snarky, or start a war here (we have enough of those), but I just want to know. WHY? As pointed out, too much of this can damage your fuel pump. Why the need to know how far you can go on a tank of gas? There are so many variables that you won’t get an accurate answer. Among the variables are: Accuracy of the fuel gauge. Accuracy of the gas station pump. I’m including the auto-cutoff point in this. Current MPG. MPG for all of the distance you traveled since your last fill-up. Anticipated MPG on the road ahead. There are multiple variables in this including terrain and traffic conditions. I have two main criteria for when I fill up my tank. If gas prices are rising fast, I will fill up when it gets below a half a tank. I am with you mac....I have in the past over filled it and leaked on the ground, I tend to fill up as much as possible even into the fuel neck I suppose. To date on my 2015 I have not been able to put enough fuel in it to push the dte to over 400 miles. When driving as much as I do, I get a feel for whether the fule prices will be falling or rising and I am no stranger aftering seeing a "trend" to stop and top it off regardless of amount that I need/have. I have been burned too many times to see gas at one price today and raised over $.30/gal the next morning...when you drive as much as we do, hell we live in these vehicles it seems, it all adds up.. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Funny sometimes I go into the station to get the receipt because they run out of paper or in Iowa the thing is frozen. The clerk asks me how much and I always say. CinnamonEdge Posted April 22, 2015 Report Share Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) I filled up a gas can to the 2.5 gallon mark and the pump said 3 gallons. So I called the towns dept of measures to report it. Also told the station attendant. Not sure if it was fixed or not because I stopped gong there. If I was to fill up 18 gallons it would have told me i pumped close to 22 gallons. It probably the pump.
