Buzz928 Posted January 7, 2008 Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 I got my Edge AWD last May and I have got a very soft brake pedal, so much so that sometimes I need to pump to get a solid feel again. The dealer flushed the fluid once and it was cured but it has now returned. My neighbor who got his at the same time has never had this issue. Do of any of you experience this? sengland Posted January 7, 2008 Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 No I don't have this issue, but it sounds to me that you have a leak somewhere and the Brake system is drawing air into it. A soft Brake issue is normally related to Air entrainment. Even moisture will still compress although moisture will cause other problems, but not usually a soft pedal. You say the dealer flushed the system once and it was better, but has now returned. I would ask them to bleed the brakes and watch them do so. If they find air in the system then make certain they check everything for tightness and any sign of a leak. If this cures the problem, if only temporarily then you know you are getting air in the system. Your dealer will jump all over that issue PDQ. It is either air entering the system, due to porous flex hoses (not very likely) or a soft mounting, using thin flexible metal, of the master cylinder. VW had this problem with their type 4 back in the 70s...This entire car was a problem( 4 year production run)... But the Lincoln LS is different than an Edge- the same design, using thin metal, is not likely... Maybe this is a quirky master cylinder design ??? She justed a curb hit a road sign and did alot of damage to the vehicle. We took it to the repair shop and will be getting it back this week. It will go to FORD to see what they think. I agree the brakes are spongy but have not had time to look in depth at them - heck - we have had the car for 2 days and one of those days was the superbowl. I had a Ford Contour that was spongy too. Replaced the flexible lines with SS ones and it helped a lot imo - semi easy to do - but not for faint of heart since brake are very important. During the upgrade, flushed and replaced the fluid - night and day. On my Mazda 3, I still do have the stock flexible lines and no spongy feeling. They provide a great improvement on the rubber hoses which stretch under the hydraulic pressure of heavy braking. I have those on my race car, along with a pretty incredible brake system. I have considered flushing the system myself and using the same Motul brake fluid I race with but through time I have found the problem to be intermittent on my Edge, which is frustrating and hard to pin point the cause.
