New (To Me) 2013 Edge SEL AWD 3.5L

Hey everyone :) Just picked up a 2013 Edge - been looking at them for a while. I have long history in automotive coming at it from a few different angles over the year. Cars are a hobby now and I'm looking forward to discovering the Edge.

I've got a ton of reading and learning to do and this seems like a great place to do that. Only have one pic so far which was taken on the way home from picking the Edge up. Looking forward to getting to a place where I can start giving back some of what I'm about to start taking from this community.

Hi Dood, Welcome. Very nice looking ride. Is it fwd or awd? I bought my 13 sel new in Feb. 2013 , haven't had any problems. Don't have many miles on it either. Been on a few road trips of 2500 plus miles with no issues and what I think is excellent gas mileage. All my trips have averaged 26 plus mpg. This included Smoky Mountain driving and a lot of two lane highways. Good luck with your new ride.

I attached photo of mine.

Thanks for the welcomes guys :) VERY nice looking ride Larry !!!

My Edge is AWD - was on the fence about FWD vs AWD but when I found this one and it was AWD I was sold. The guy who owned it before me towed a jet ski with it (confirmed this) so it has a hitch and a trailer brake installed which will come in handy if I want to do some light towing of toys with it lol.

This is my third Ford. First one was a 85 Tempo I bought in 95 to use as a winter beater one winter when I had my first vette. That one might not count because there weren't may Ford parts on it by the time I bought it lol. I also had a 2008 F-150 FX4 supercrew. Very much enjoyed the truck but I started commuting about 50 miles a day and the gas bill was killing me so I traded it. Now I live 2 miles from work I can take wherever gas mileage hit the Edge throws at me LOL.

Mods have started already - small stuff. Weathertech mats are ordered as is the "stubby" antenna. Next on the list is an audio upgrade - 4 new door speakers, a sub, and a couple of amps. I'm also looking at the Bright Lights LED DRL kit as I need DRL's where I live and that setup look very cool. I also need to do something with the headlights as I need them to be brighter. I'm going to try to find some good aftermarket bulbs (no cheap blue crap lol) before I even consider HID's as I don't really want to go down that road.

As I do more reading on here I'm sure the mod list will grow ................

Good morning Dood,

We opted for fwd, don't need awd, plus one less thing to go wrong. The awd does have a leaking ptu problem. I understand there is a tsb bulletin on it???

I don't understand the trailer brake controller? I've never seen a ski-jet trailer that has brakes.

Far as Fords I've owned. Without thinking too hard there is enough to use all my fingers on both hands. And yes, I have all my fingers. lol

2 miles from work , who worries about mpg.

After reading the mods you plan to do I figure there may be a slight age difference between us. I'm at the point in life that the speakers and headlights work fine. 70 plus..

Nothing wrong with your plans I was there at one time.

I did install a class lll hitch from e-trailer called the hidden hitch. All you see is the receiver , not the frame of the hitch. also it's under the bumper far enough you don't bump your leg on it. ( posted picts ) Every once in awhile I'll pull a 4x8 or 5x9 trailer with a lawn tractor on it. All for now.

Have a great day

Larry

I know you said you don't want to go down the HID road but I would think about it. After 3 years with a $40.00 DDM 35/5000 kit in my 2011 I can honestly say that it's the best upgrade I've made to my Edge. They really do work awesome in the Edge's halogen projectors and it's a super easy install if you go with a 35 watt kit.

Okay .... you've got my attention with $40 HID's lol. I can't seem to find a thread about them. Can you provide some insight and advise where I could get them? How hard are they to install? Are they "plug and play" for the Edge? Do many here run the kit?

Sorry for all the questions but what happens when you get my attention LOL ;). Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah - as far as mod's go .... I need to add a couple of new chrome exhaust tips to the list LOL.

Just noticed you're in Canada. I'm not sure how HIDs work with DRLs or if it's even possible. There are a bunch of HID threads in the Glass and Lighting section. I can tell you that the stock 9012 bulbs in your Edge are some of the brightest halogen bulbs on the market so there's not much, if any, room for improvement when it comes to bulb replacement. One night drive down a dark two lane road will probably get you looking for a brighter solution!!!!!

Welcome Dood. Does being exNASCAR mean you once followed (or drove) NASCAR but no longer?

Be anxious to hear about your audio upgrades. So far the Sony system in my Edge has left me less than impressed. The same system in my Taurus sounds great. But in the Edge it sounds like something is missing in the music. Both systems are stock.

Like the others have already said, the HIDs are worth the money.

I was involved in a support role for NASCAR teams for several years but am no longer in the industry. I love absolutely everything about the Edge except the crappy arse stereo they put it in. I avoided the Sony system for that reason as I realized aftermarket (ex the head unit) was the way to go lol.

I'm going it in phases so I don't break the budget all at once - all 4 door speakers are being replaced on Tuesday and we'll see what difference that makes. Also having HID's installed the same day and have ordered the Bright Lites puddle lights. Also going to pull the trigger on the darker LED sport tails from them as well.

Hmmmm ..... considering the original plan was to leave the Edge fully stock I'm not doing too well lol ;)

Hey, Dood. Nice white knght! I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum with my Tuxedo Black '13 SEL. Mine has FWD, not AWD, but looks like we both have those chrome-clad wheels. Didn't even realize they were plastic covers until I signed the papers! Do you have the BAMR? I do. Love it. No regrets. I love the look and the ride. Did a couple of cosmetic mods so far, but like you am seruously considering upgrading the sound system. Keep me posted on how that project goes for you. Best of luck with the new ride!

VERY nice Edge King !!! As much as I love the Edge in black I don't have the time to give it to ensure it looks amazing all the time. White hides dirt better so I went with it LOL. I had the exact experience you did - didn't realize the wheels were chrome CLAD until I hit these forums. I kind of felt like a poser once I found out but I quickly found out that no seems to realize they are plastic so I'm semi at peace with it LOL.

One of the criteria I had when looking for an Edge is that it had to have the BAMR. Not only do I love the light it brings in when closed, I really like how low profile it appears from the outside when open. Aside from the plastic wheels I'm not disappointed with the Edge in any way - except the pathetic sound system LOL. I can't wait until this Tuesday when those horrific door speakers get ripped out and replaced with high quality aftermarket pieces. If I can get some clear sound and some decent highs out of the system with just speakers I may stop there. If not it'll be onto the audio processor and external amp.

New mod to my list that I just ordered are the shadow black LED tails from Drive Bright. Apparently they just started selling them and soon there will be a way set shooting toward me - can't wait !!!

The last car I owned that was black was an 87 Buick Regal GN. I spent HOURS hitting it with zaino and a buffer and the California car duster. As much as I know silver or grey would be easier to maintain I seem to be drawn to either black or white vehicles ...... especially if chrome is involved :)

So ... just picked the Edge up from my local car audio shop. As usual, they did amazing work for a very reasonable price. A couple of points worth noting:

fishx65 - Thank you for recommending I go HID. Haven't seen them in the dark yet but the light they threw at the install bay door vs stock halogens was VERY impressive. Can't wait to see the difference they make in the dark.

good2Bking - they replaced all 4 door speakers with 2 pair of aftermarket 2 ways speakers that were about C$150 a pair. These are the same speakers I used in my F150 and I was pleased with them in that application. I have three words for you in regard to getting rid of the POS factory speakers: DO. IT. NOW. What a HUGE difference in sound. I can actually hear bass, mid's and high's and clear vocals. Best $300 I've ever spent.

Got my Bright Lights puddle lights in the mail today complete with their complimentary license plate LED bulbs. Ordered the darkened LED tails from them on the weekend - can't wait until they get there. FWIW, I've VERY impressed by the Bright Lights puddle lights. GREAT service and very nice packaging and presentation of the product.

The Weathertech's should be here tomorrow. Hopefully this will do it for mod's for me for a while ....... I need some time to earn the mod money I've already spent LOL ......

They installed Kaption Audio 5x7's - model SRX-572. Kaption is a Canadian company that makes high quality automotive aftermarket speakers. They source from Canadian suppliers so no matter how ridiculous the FX rate is they can provide outstanding quality drivers at reasonable prices. As I mentioned, I used them in my FX4 and was very happy with them and am now VERY happy with them in my Edge.

Based on what I'm hearing now, I have no need for aftermarket amp's or subs. They even make Sirius sound good - what does THAT tell you lol ;)

Excellent. Thank you. I'll let you know how I make out.

Undecided if I should trust the install to some kid in the local audio shop vs. doing it myself.

Now that it comes down to just having to replace the door speakers, I may attempt it myself. I have some good instructions provided via this forum. Back in December, Snake456 shared this You Tube link in his post in the Accessories & Mods thread...

Now that summer is here, and you've confirmed that all I really need is better speakers, no more excuses.

If you feel comfy with doing it yourself go for it !!! In my case, the reality is that for what my local shop charges in labor per hour I can earn more than that working that hour so I'll pay them to do it. That said, they do VERY good work and warranty what they do so I feel 100% comfy with them doing the work for me.

Please note that I had the "base" system in my Edge and not the "Sony" upgrade as I knew I'd end up ripping it out starting at the drivers back. Drove home with all windows down and the pano roof full open and had Clapton screaming at much less than 1/2 volume so I'm a happy camper :)

I pretty much did all the exact same mods, except the tails, to my 2011. Yes, speakers make a huge difference compared to the plastic toys that Ford uses. The one other thing ya might want to do is convert all interior bulbs to led. Did you happen to find out what Hid kit he used along with the wattage and color temp?????

Thanks - LED's on order for all interior bulbs .. forgot to mention that. HID kit is by Lumens and temp is 6000K. Installer said if I don't like 6K they will swap them out for 5K's no charge but local law enforcement aren't hasling people with 6K aftermarkets but they're all over 5K aftermarkets like fat kids on a M&M lol (aftermarket HID's aren't legal where I live). I also needed a DRL module to deal with the DRL requirements where I live. Still look WAY better than stock when I saw the "after" image on the install bay door. Better pattern and MUCH brighter.

If the 6000's are to blue for ya I wouldn't hesitate to go back for the 5000's which should be a little brighter and whiter. I actually thought my DDM 5000's were too blue when I first installed them but I think it was just a little to big of a shock after driving behind halogens for so long. If ya start getting flashed by other drivers it's really easy to adjust them down a little which I had to do.
