Tow package and hitch on 2015 Edge

Recommended Posts

We are looking to purchase a 2015 Edge. We are current owners of a 2008 Edge.

I am debating about ordering a 2015 Titanium with the tow package or purchasing one without and adding an aftermarket hitch, such as a Curt.

My local dealers don't have any Edges with Tow package that I can see. So, that leads me to my questions.

If you have the factory installed tow package, does it come with a 2" receiver or a 1.25" receiver?

I realize that the factory hitch is a class II, and the Curt hitch is Class III.

My hesitation on passing on the tow package and just going for the after market Curt hitch is that I possibly loose out on other benefits of the tow package such as trailer sway control and upgraded cooling fans.

I really prefer the 2" receiver as that opens us up to more accessories and I can use my existing Thule bike rack that needs 2".

Thanks for any answers and feedback.

My .02 cents and vote would be to do the factory tow "package" as it more than just a place to connect your toys to.

IIRC correctly, this includes better cooling, higher output alternator, and Tow Stability Control in the drive train's computer. Not 100% sure on the first two, but 100% on the stability control as I have the factory tow package on my 2011.

Hi Mark

I asked this question also. The factory hitch comes with a 2 inch receiver, upgraded cooling fans and radiator, 4 pin wiring harness and trailer sway control. Also the hitch is more hidden then an aftermarket which makes for a better appearance. To me this makes the factory installed hitch a no brainer

I love the hitch in my titanium, looks good, like it belongs, not just stuck under the bumper, and with the back up camera, if you cannot center your hitch over the trailer you are backing up to, then. You must be blind...very very easy and right on the mark every time...post-9584-0-27954400-1435704852_thumb.jpgpost-9584-0-32019700-1435704896_thumb.jpg

Just got my 2015 Titanium, with factory hitch. It is 2", tucked up under the bumper. To do a aftermarket, and get it to set up hidden away, you will have to do surgery on the dam that sets below the bumper. This is all molded around nicely.

I've wrestled with the same decision on my Gen 1 and what it came down to for me was the fact that other things are included with the factory option. Like on the older ones, I think you got receiver hitch, engine oil cooler, larger radiator, upgraded battery and cooling fans, wiring harness and 4-pin connector

I looked up the 2014/2015 class ll tow package and this is what Ford says is included;

Class II Trailer Tow Package includes hitch
receiver, larger radiator, upgraded cooling fans,
wiring harness with 4-pin connector, and trailer
sway control (3,500 lbs. max.)
To me, it ended up being more about enhanced cooling, etc. than the actual receiver. I also hate the small receiver as I have lot's of 2" stuff I can't use on it.

Dealer is installing tow package on my 2015 Sport next week. He is including a 7 pin connector and transmission oil cooler but said I didn't need a larger capacity radiator as tow limit is only 3500 lbs. Does this sound right or do I need the larger radiator? Thanks

The tow rating on the Sport is 2000lbs, check the owners manual. Having the dealer install any of the listed items does not increase it's capacity.

I don't know why....must be a personal thing...I would rather have ANY option installed by the factory not an aftermarket. To me it looks better, and if there were any issues down the road I would imagine it would be easier to resolve them as it "came that way". I don't think they "cut" em as they are molded,,,

Different strokes....

They would have to cut the rear valance on the Sport since there was no option for Towing from the factory.

Do not purchase a 2015 or later Edge that doesn't already have a hitch on it if you want a hitch that is not aftermarket. I spoke to several dealerships in the area on March 23, 2016 and Ford changed the 2015 Edge design so there is no longer a factory hitch available. You can get an ugly Uhaul hitch or other after market hitch that hangs down and sticks out below the back bumper but the factory hitch that is built into the bumper is not available. I am disgusted with this change and if I had been informed of this before my purchase I would not have bought an Edge. Why spend $40,000 on a vehicle to deface it with an ugly hitch. Bad move Ford! Never buying a Ford again. Will stick with Jeep.
