New Owner Power Liftgate needs attention?

Hi,

so my GF just got a 2013 Edge Limited 2.0ecoboost which has the power liftgate. I don't know if this is a problem or user incompetence and the searching I have done hasn't yielded the same problem we are experiencing.

Basically when we press the liftgate button on the keyfob or from inside the car it will try to open (moves about 6 inches), then stops and beeps 3 times and then closes. if we manually open the liftgate (which is really hard) it will do the same thing when trying to close. I read that if it beeps three times while doing these symptoms it means the gate thinks something is in the way of it opening, although there is not such thing in the way.

so I imagine its a sensor that needs replaced or re-calibration but I thought I would ask this forum if anyone has had any such experiences? do I need to remove the 3 LTM fuses to let it reset and then try? or is this something that needs parts replaced?

also I apologize if this is in the wrong section, I tried to pick the one i felt was best suited.

This thread to "reset" the liftgate might be just what you need:

Might actually end up needing a sensor replaced or wiring patched or rust cleaned from contacts etc., but give this a go ...

And seriously think about a new battery with a reset of the Battery Management System (if the Edge is so equipped) anyway. Batteries are tasked with a lot of work these days, and 3-4 year lifespans are ordinary.

thanks for the info im going to try that,

so we just bought the car yesterday and im looking it over a little more today, it looks like the dealership already put a brand new Ford Battery in it with 675cca build data 6/15, could this be why the liftgate if acting up?

also what is this battery management system you speak of?

ok so I have tried what you listed, then i tried removing the fuses 59, 14, and 17 for 20 seconds and replacing them, I also tried removing the battery for 20 seconds and then reconnecting.

the gate is doing the same thing, but I did find that if I tell the gate to open and then easily assist the gate opening or closing with my hand it works as it should. but under its own strength it will open or close about 6 inches then revert and chime 3 times.

im wondering if the gate Pistons or Hinges whatever you want to call them are applying to much resistance and the motor thinks something is in the way? any advice from here would be appreciated. can I detach the gate motor and just use it manually for a while?

so I fixed it today, I spent about 2 hours tracking down the part number (the three dealerships in my area could not find the part so I had to find it for them.. Humble Brag) once I had the Part number (bt4z78431a78b) I found that 1 of the 3 dealerships had the part the next closest dealership with the part was in Kansas HA lucked out!

so I purchased it for $146 which I believe i could get cheaper on the web but I like being able to see the part in person before purchase and know that it is a FoMoCo part, took it home and installed which was super easy. the liftgate works flawlessly now, the Liftgate actuator that I removed was completely binded up (I could not compress it with my hand) I think the previous owner didn't know how to use the liftgate properly as from my research this part isnt something that breaks on its own especially with only 2 years of use which would explain the lack stock on the shelf's for purchase in NA and lack of info on the actual part.

but anyways I would like to say thanks to everyone for your guidance.

What directions did you use to change out the actuator rod? I've been looking at it but can't figure how to get to the base of the motor without removing the entire side panel.
