Headliner Overhead Rattle - Vista Roof

The rattle over my head is getting progressively worse. Started sometime after 10k miles and seems to be worse on cooler mornings. It is most prominent when driving over rough pavement. I can make it stop by applying upward pressure to the headliner in the area over and slightly behind my head, along the perimeter of the vista roof. Initial investigation tells me the noise originates from a loose fit between the attachment point of the magnetic clips that hold the headliner to the roof and the headliner backing itself which is plastic. If I pull down on the headliner such that the magnets are not in contact with the roof, the noise is still there. Some people are cursed with this problem on the passenger side, mine is right over my head, so I'm working on identifying it. Anyone else have a better idea or a solution yet?

Please keep this thread specific to the original topic. There are a bunch of rattle threads that are getting difficult to follow and contain various unrelated issues.

Yes. for a few weeks I thought it was the seat belt height adjuster mechanism, but later found If I place my hand on the headliner while driving that the vibration is in sync with the headliner movement while driving over rough pavement. Applying force upward with the palm of my hand pretty much makes it stop. It's just behind the area over the headrest. Give it a try and let me know.

I also have the overhead rattle. Today I noticed the roof trim panels were a bit loose (there are 2 on each side, between the moving glass and the doors) and found that at least one clip was missing. By pressing on the headliner in this area I was able to duplicate the rattle. I'm going to see if my dealer can look at it tomorrow.

I am finding a possible source for the overhead noise. On the roof between the glass and the outer edge of the car is a black filler panel. On the driver's side, I'm missing one retainer clip right over my head. Here is a pic, one from drivers side (missing) and one from the passenger with clip. The front ones are easy to inspect with the glass open, but the back clips are not. I suspect I have more than one missing because the whole filler plate seems loose.

I simply do not have the time to go to the dealer at the moment. I have taken out two of the magnets and can say it is not them. And although the exterior filler panel is missing at least 1 clip, I put cardboard under it and can say that is not the culprit either. I'm focusing on the cross bar between the fixed and the moving glass as the source. When the roof is open, the noise goes away.

Update: got the car back from dealer yesterday. They sent to an outside shop to do the moonroof work, so I don't have full details. I was told they removed the headliner and isolated and repaired rattles between roof panel and sunroof. To my surprise the missing clip wasn't replaced, but the rattles are gone so I guess they might have tightened something down or stuffed foam pads inside. Hope this helps...

I took my 2015 edge into the dealership for the second time for a rattle over the drivers head by the b-pillar. The first time they said it was the magnets and they put silicone on them to stop the rattle, it did not stop. So this this I brought it to them and now they are saying they will replace the entire roof liner. Do you guys think this will fix the problem? Or are they just throwing parts at it and hopes its fixes it.

Took mine to the dealer for the exact same issue. They put a few pieces of foam tape on the inner side of the headliner but it didn't fix the issue. I can duplicate the noise by pushing up on the headliner in that area and can hear the clicking noise. I'm stumped as to what it is unless it's one of the magnets itself.

Have the same problem. Been to the dealer 4 times and is currently in the dealership for 3 days. They still don't seem to know. They claim Ford has been called but no response. If you had any success, your resolution is greatly appreciated.

No solution yet. Don't have that much time to give it to the dealer. They had it for a whole day and blew the opportunity to do what I asked... To have one person drive and a second to diagnose. All they said was that a tech drove it and confirmed the noise is present.... Followed by telling me to make another appointment for them to dig into it. ?

I have had my '15 Edge since August, and have had rattle issues since a couple of weeks after getting it. The first time it went in they traced it to the side curtain supports, tapping the sheet metal. They took all four curtain supports off and installed a "rattle" kit and anti-rattle tape. That solved the issue for about 6 weeks, and then the rattle, or at least a similar one started up again and got progressively worse. I just took it back in this past Tuesday to be looked at, and now they tell me they found a pinch weld in the sunroof mount that is flexing and causing the rattle. It's now in the body shop getting that fixed. Hopefully that solves it this time.

You know, I just have to wonder. How many of us would have taken a Vista Roof Delete option if it would have been available? I am talking about those of us who really want those packages like the 301A or 302A on the Titanium model. For sure, I would have taken it but for some reason Ford wants to put these in a lot of vehicles.

I think I have the same problem also on my 15' Sport. Bad rattle coming right from the right side pillar between passenger front and rear doors. The first dealer was supposed to fix another rattle and just replaced the sunroof panel on the right hand side which didn't fix the issue at all.

Update: got my 15 Edge sport with vista roof back yesterday. Dealer had it for nearly 2 weeks. They tightened brackets behind the drivers side curtain airbag and vista roof. Did not make the noise when I picked it up, was about 30° outside. Today, about 10° outside, noise reappeared. Seems to be even louder and more pronounced. Seems to be the cold weather. Is that was others are experiencing?
