Laurie Posted October 19, 2015 Report Share Posted October 19, 2015 I have only owned my 2015 edge since Labor Day and three separate times, while bent into the trunk, the automatic tailgate started closing. Anybody else experiencing that? It was quite scary and alarming, and good thing, my key was nearby and I was able to press the button to stop it. omar302 Posted October 19, 2015 Report Share Posted October 19, 2015 I'd guess you might have been very close to the back of your Edge that your foot was actually within the kick sensor range. If the feature is not suited for you, maybe it can disabled in left screen menu. Also note that the power tailgate has an Obstacle Detection mechanism for safety so rest assured that would not have a crushing force if it closes on something, and I don't think an infant can be left positioned in the path of the lift gate. Obstacle Detection When Closing The system stops when it detects an obstacle. A tone sounds and the system reverses to open. Once you remove the obstacle, you can power close the liftgate. Note: Entering your vehicle while the liftgate is closing can cause your vehicle to bounce and activate obstacle detection. To prevent this, let the power liftgate close completely before you enter your vehicle. Before driving off, check the instrument cluster for a liftgate or door ajar message or warning indicator. Failure to do this could result in unintentionally leaving the liftgate open while driving. When Opening The system stops when it detects an obstacle and a tone sounds. Anna1045 Posted December 7, 2015 Report Share Posted December 7, 2015 I had this happen to me Friday. I was loading groceries and stepped too close to the rear and the lift gate came down on my head HARD and it never detected me - I heard the chimes but never registered what they were. I have a knot the size of a quarter on the top side of my head. Two women witnessed it in a grocery parking lot and were shocked that I was not knocked unconscious. I waited a few minutes to stabilize and drove straight to dealer. They could not turn off the auto lift gate. Even disabling it on the menu did not keep it from being triggered by your foot and coming up and down. They also tested the detection feature and could not get it to auto reverse ever. The service department is researching and I am too..... I read that that Ford Escape obstacle detection works but as of this writing, my Ford Edge auto lift gate is a lethal weapon. Can't imagine why the obstacle detection didn't work on the Edge, may need a Ford Engineer to look into this. Consider having the issue escalated at the dealership, or, if they don't want to, you can PM FordService on here.
