2012 Edge SE EcoBoost heater blows cold

Good Morning,

Just purchased our 2012 Edge SE EcoBoost about a month ago, and tried to use the heater this morning for the first time. With the controls set all the way to hot, no matter which vent is selected, it blows cold. I'm a part time mechanic, so I am fairly handy.

Where should I start? Coolant temp is right in the middle fo the gauge, so I know the engine is getting hot... If someone has a schematic of where the blend motor is located, that's my next guess. I'd really love a factory service manual for it, if someone has a pdf they will share! Not sure what is electronically operated, etc.

Thanks for the help!

Is the coolant level ok in the overflow/degas bottle? FULL COLD mark met?

Coolant looks clean?

Are the heater hoses warm/hot?

Cabin filter clean/free of debris?

Blower motor blowing fine?

Those would be the first items on my checklist. After that, it could be the blend door OR the CCM (climate control module) itself.

2007 FSM: Heater Core — Plugged

WARNING: The heater core inlet hose will become too hot to handle if the system is working correctly.

  1. Check to see that the engine coolant is at the correct level.
  1. Start the engine and turn on the heater.
  1. When the engine coolant reaches operating temperature, feel the heater core inlet and outlet hoses to see if they are hot.
  1. If the outlet only is not hot:
    • the heater core may have an air pocket.
    • the heater core may be plugged.
  1. If the inlet only is not hot:
    • the thermostat may not be working correctly.

2007 Edge_Insufficient Erratic or No Heat Diagnostics.PDF

EB engines tend to develop air pockets easily. You may want to raise the passenger side of the Edge on jackstands or a curb with the engine cold/at ambient. That makes the degas bottle a high point. Then run the engine with the heat on max/blower on max until it reaches normal operating temperature. Then put the Edge on level ground, let the engine cool back down and check coolant level again. See if it drops any further than that 1/2 inch you already see.

More exact stepbysteps here.

The blend actuator should be behind the panel cover under the steering wheel. This is how it looks on the 2007:

From the 2007 FSM:

NOTE: It is not required to install the new LH temperature blend door linkage parts included in the LH temperature blend door actuator service part kit if only the temperature blend door actuator requires replacement and the linkage parts are not broken or binding.

LH temperature blend door actuator and linkage

  1. Remove the 2 lower steering column opening cover bolts.
  1. Detach the lower steering column opening cover.
  1. Disconnect the in-vehicle temperature sensor aspirator hose and electrical connector.
  1. Position the instrument panel wire harness away from the LH temperature blend door actuator.
  1. Remove the 3 LH temperature blend door actuator screws.
  1. Disconnect the LH temperature blend door actuator electrical connector.
  1. Remove the LH temperature blend door actuator.
  1. Manually operate, and inspect the LH temperature blend door linkage for incorrect placement, binding or damage.

LH temperature blend door linkage only

  1. Detach the 2 retaining tabs and remove the LH temperature blend door linkage.

we replaced the Blend door Actuator on our 2012 Edge and the Air works perfectly now but the heater is not working. Does anyone know if we will need to take the car into the dealer to have the computer reset?

Thanks!

Do you have dual zone climate control? Was the heat working before? Check the coolant level first, even a 1/2-1 inch below the COLD FULL line can affect performance. If it looks ok there, it could be the HVAC module needs resetting, OR there is actually a physical issue with the coolant flow through the heater core. One member very recently had to have their module reprogrammed to get it working, so that is a real possibility. I don't know if pulling a fuse and resetting it that way will help but it is worth a try. Fuse 37 on the non-turbo and Fuse 46 on the turbo engined Edge, in the passenger compartment fuse panel under the driverside dash.
