It's a part of the shifter assembly. I might have a photo from my wife's MKX. It's not really needed so don't let it worry you. As you move the shifter, the roller moves down a ridged path. It adds "feel" to the shifter when it's correctly located.

I figured it was part of the shifter... It was in between the panel and shifter assembly on the floor. Ty for the answer! Much appreciated. I didn't feel anything different about how the shifter operated but noticed the piece there one day. Thnx again:-)

I priced the cost to replace and fix it. It's not too expensive and not too difficult.

 

Have I done it yet? No.

 

Someday, but it's not a priority.

if you ever decide to install a new/used one sometime in the future, ping this thread. I can upload PDFs from the service manual. It's probably easier (and quicker) than changing the spark plug
