Key FOB AND manual key won't work

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Here is what happened. I have a 2007 Ford edge SE. The other day my wife went out to lunch and everything was fine with the car. She got back to work, and then a few hours later she had to leave again. She tried to unlock the edge with the keyfob and it wouldn't work. So then she manually stuck the key in the lock and tried to turn it to unlock the door and it would not turn. So basically there was NO way to get into the car. She had to call a tow truck guy to come unlock the car. He put his little car unlock tool between the window and door panel and did his thing and unlocked the car for us. So my wife gets in and starts it up and everything is fine. No dead battery or anything. Then she locked it up and tried the keyfob again and this time it worked but she could not unlock it manually with the key still. My question is, how can the keyfob just not work all of a sudden and whats up with the key lock? Anyone else ever have this problem? Thanks in advance.

Did she try the 2nd key, fob, to see if they work?

When you use the key, does it turn when unlocking (indicates a connecting rod may have become disconnected). If it doesn't turn, would indicate a broken lock.

One other thought, have you ever tried this key before, are you certain that this is the correct key?

That the fob didn't work and then did, could be a weak battery. Don't know of what it could be otherwise as it works now. Perhaps the battery is weak and she was too far away to talk to the car, but was closer on the last attempt.

2007 key fob. If the battery has never been changed then the battery is dead. Door lock most likely did not work because it has grime or garbage in it because it is never used. Try changing the battery in both and getting a lock cleaner or lubricant to spray it and clean it out then work the key in and out.

I am having the same issue. 2016 Ford Edge. Tried to unlock door with both fobs. Nothing! Took manual key out pried the cover off to get to key entry and turned the key but nothing happened. Door wouldn’t unlock. Have to get into the car to pop the hood if I am to jump the battery to the car.

Carol,

Did you try the keypad on the driver's door?  Enter your personal or the factory code.
Once you're in the Edge if it still won't start put the fob in the tray at the bottom of the center console 'then' try the Start button again.  If the Edge starts now you can be pretty certain the batteries in both of your fobs are goners.   If those batteries have never been replaced it's probably about time anyway.

Guest This happened to me, too.

This also happened to myself. My key fobs would not respond and unlock my vehicle. The manual keys would not unlock the door. The dealership told me it was caused by “vandals” whom shoved something in the key hole and broke/damaged the outer door’s cylinder internally. About $500 to fix.

Guest Same problem today!

This happened to me this morning. However, I will preface that by saying that my key fob died about a year ago and I've been using the manual key hole for that long with no problems. Then about a month ago, my car door ajar warning was persistent nearly every time I opened and closed the door. No rhyme or reason as to how hard or soft to close the door to get it to "engage". Can't lock the door if the car doesn't think the door is closed. I have a 2011. This door ajar issue is a known issue with Ford, so much so that a petition was submitted to issue a recall. Ford won't do it. Ford Edge's made after 2011 have the issue that if the door is ajar, the doors won't lock and the dome lights won't go off while driving. Dangerous for night driving and having kids in the car that can open doors. 2011 and older don't have the door lock and lights issue. I think the door ajar issue is related to the manual key not functioning...has something to do with the mechanics and electronics in the door lock mechanism. Infuriating that Ford knows this is an issue for 10 years worth of cars and won't fix the issue. AAA came this morning and got me in, car started just fine, lights work, all the things were fine. I just can't lock the door because I won't be able to get back in to it.

Guest 2014 Ford Edge

I have had 4 Fords with remote keyless entry - (Focus, Explorer, Expedition) and now Edge and never has the "key fob" unlock button broken.  Now Ford service is saying I have to buy a new key ($450) because both keys are broken (unlock button only) all other buttons work fine -  The is unacceptable and Ford needs to replace the key at no cost to me as this has to be a flaw in the manufacture of the key.  Has anyone experienced this similar case?  so I start a recall/replacement action.  Please respond.

Inasmuch as both keys do work at all, shows that the keys are still coded to the car.

I'd try reconnecting the keys to the car by using the procedure in the manual. (I'm thinking that the car somehow lost the ability to recognize the unlock siqnal).

Forget about starting a recall. You'd stand a better chance starting a pissing contest. Just saying ....
