LED or HID Upgrade in 2016 Edge....

Recommended Posts

Looking for some info from anyone who has upgraded their projector halogen bulbs to either HID or LED bulbs in a 2016 Edge, particularly in Canada with the DRL's. Looking for any info you can provide, what make did you use, any special problems, any other mods you had to do to the headlight housing etc?

TIA...

well, halogen bulbs are going to give you the most usable light since it's in a halogen projector. Though you wont win any cool points for the yellow bulb color. HID will work, not ideal but can get by with minimal glare for oncoming traffic. LED isn't going to do anything for you in a halogen projector, to properly use LED bulbs you would have to retrofit in a OEM setup from another headlight.

Thanks for the input, Nick. I didn't realize there were different projector lens for the LED bulbs. LED's are not an option as far as I know on the Edge, although HID's are.

Hopefully someone else who's done the swap will have some more info.......

Just completed the swap from stock to LED in my 16' Edge, installed was extremely simple and light output is great. I need to modify the dust caps to allow the onboard fan of the LED module to breath but the unit itself is waterproof (I have the wires hidden and sealed where water cannot get to it)

Personally, it's worth the upgrade, it does throw a good amount of light on the road.

as for an output shot, the pic looks terrible. The line where light starts should be straight, I hope your on a serious incline cause the hotspot is sitting on the pavement right in front of the car and it should be thrown down the road. This happens cause, optically, the headlights can't focus the bulb properly.

Are you in Canada where the H11's act as the DRL's with reduced voltage? At least I assume it's lower voltage as the lights get brighter when turned on....

Where did you get the LED's from?

Thanks,

I highly recommend the Morimoto Elite HID kit with XB55 50W ballasts and XB35 4500k bulbs. A bit more expensive then most of the kbs with active fans

I highly recommend the Morimoto Elite HID kit with XB55 50W ballasts and XB35 4500k bulbs. A bit more expensive then most of the kits but very complete plug & play with of quality components , simple instructions and a 5year warranty.

I'll take more pic's of the beam pattern. 1st pattern is OEM halogens, and the next pic has HID on passenger side & halogen drivers side. Kit took me about an hour to install and pattern is perfect. Crisp, clean beam pattern with no dead spots and very straight cut off. Illuminate sides of road great on lows and the highs are absolutely bright as I would ever want. I have crappy night vision but still can't imagine why anyone would need the 55w bulbs. The 4500k color temp is about the same as OEM'mHIDs, but I'm probably going to order 5500k's. Running the 35w's with the headlights Properly Adjusted I have not had one person flash me their brights in the 2 months I've had them in.

I tried the Opt7 LED's first but had horrible dark spots in middle of the beam patterns and the more I thought about it, the less I wanted bulbs with active fans

Its not bad...but could be WAY better

Just a quick question and not trying to be rude. You are in a lot of these HID upgrade threads and always saying that this is a bad idea, is not an upgrade, doesn't look good, etc.

if you aren't a fan of this mod, why do you keep browsing this section of the forums?

because there was a time when I to used to drive around with horrible lighting, blinding the world. Then someone schooled me on how to properly "mod" your headlights. If everyone turned a blind eye to people putting out wrong info then we all wouldn't be too bright would we? Also, I don't view the Forum I just view the active topics on the right of the screen, if somethings outside of those 10 or so posts, I wont see it cause that's as deep as I usually go unless I am on 24hr duty or something

I also agree with you Nick. I tried adding HID a couple of time previously, even on projector based headlights, and although the 1st impressions were always like "wow, much brighter" they never gave the same level of "useful" illumination (light on the road I use) as factory HID or even as halogen mods (H9 bulbs in H11 housings, 9005 in 9006 housing or HIR/9011 in 9012/9005/9006 housings), and worst of all, any non-factory HID mods caused considerable glare/blinding to others drivers, which I also suffer from others. The blinding/glare, in my opinion, is so bad that I think there should be more action from authorities regarding vehicles with blinding headlights.

Buying a quality HID kit like this Morimoto Elite - and proper adjustment are the key to not blinding oncoming drivers - not to mention the plug and play harness including the relays being a breeze to install

These have a super clean beam pattern cut off on top and I have never had an oncoming driver flash me with their highs in the 6 months I've had them installed

I've done the halogen mod, well worth the $20-$30.
