Good time of the day. ;)


I'm new member of this forum and owner of Ford Edge 2012 SEL, I own this car for about 3 month and I'm pretty happy to own it.


I searched for info about filters, liquids and found this great forum.


My first question is: Oil for engine, I changed oil about month ago, I used Motorcraft 5W30 as recommended, I want to hear your opinion about this oil, is it good or not? or maybe is better to change on another oil?


Second question: Transmission oil, I read that oil in transmission should change on 150K miles, is it true? I have almost 80K miles and I think that it's time to change it, because I don't like how transmission shift on low speed. I want change oil by myself, i found info about changing oil in transmission but I can't understand is there no oil filter? I have to change liquid only? plus can someone tell me which oil to use?


Third question: Fuel filter? no fuel filter?

All your questions are answered in the owner's manual. If one did not come with the vehicle you can find a pdf at owner.ford.com or www.motorcraftservice.com.

 

My buddy is a former Ford transmission engineer and he recommends every 60K transmission fluid changes (or sooner). Let the dealer do it - they have a machine that changes almost all the fluid through the cooler lines. Much more effective than a traditional pan drain and refill.

1) Motorcraft oil is good. It is made for & recommended by Ford.

2) Most people would recommend changing the tranny fluid earlier, ~50K miles. Best to use the oil specified in the Owners Manual (Motorcraft Mercon LV).

3) Yes, there is no Fuel Filter to replace. I think the filter is part of the Fuel Pump, that might be why it is not a maintenance item.

 

Since you used 5W-30 Engine oil, I guess you have the 2.0 L 4 cylinder Engine, correct? The transmission is different between the 6 & 4 cylinder engines so take care regarding the correct procedure for changing the fluid. It might be different.

 

Edit: Just saw Akirby's post, go for 60K then as per his buddy's recommendation.

Okay so i will continue to use Motorcraft engine oil and will choose same brand for transmission. But what's about fuel filter i have to change it with fuel pump or it's good until pump is in work condition?

Base just on my experiences and changing transmission fluids at intervals of 90K+ miles, 60k+ miles and at 30K+ miles I have determined for me the best mileage is to change the transmission fluid by about 40-50K miles for my driving habits. My wife's edge all city will get a fluid change about every 18 months since she drives only city and I would die before she was able to even put 30K miles on it.

 

Oil - Changing it with at least a synblend oil of approved specs is the true way to keep the engine running. I have determined that changing the oil no matter the type or brand does the engine good and can not say any one type or brand of oil does better than the other. My orange crush ran on whatever was around and it was in excellent shape at 285,000 miles.

 

Fuel and trans filters are essentially not a maintenance item. If either is needed to be changed then you have either a fuel pump failure or a transmission failure and at that point it will be replaced when the new trans or fuel pump are installed.

Fuel filter is built into the fuel pump nowadays, it's a screen also, just like the trans "filter". So when you change the fuel pump, the filter will be changed also.

 

3.5L engines use 5W20, Ecoboost engines use 5W30. Make sure to use the correct weight oil, it is critical over time.

Yes, Mercon LV is what the owner's manual calls for, so should work fine. Don't fall for the 150K/lifetime spiel, do the regular changes/flushes, and you won't regret it.

I know that I can find this info in owners manual but I want to hear this info exactly from owners. I use 89 should I continue use it or better to use 87?

I use 87 but avoid ethanol blends whenever I can.

 

 

87. 89 is a waste.

Yep it will work.

 

 

Should be. Only for transmission though. Cannot use it for power steering, which still uses Mercon V in 2012 MY.

Today I checked transmission fluid level and was really surprised :drop: fluid is in perfect level and it's clean like brand new, I don't know what to do now... Unfortunately I don't have any information about it was replaced before or not and I have almost 80K miles, I really don't like how transmission shift on low speed. Maybe problem is not in fluid? :doh: :doh: Sometimes with climate control on in auto mode when I'm standing on traffic light I fill kick, this kick is so strong that car sways, plus today I hear hiss noise from braking pedal, I think I have to replace brake power booster and I thought maybe that's why transmission going crazy? or maybe my AC compressor is dies and that's is the reason of this kicks? I do not know what to think :doh::doh:

What behaviour is your trans exhibiting at low speeds? If the fluid truly looks good and smells correct, then the problem MAY lie elsewhere. But by changing fluid now, you KNOW when to next change fluid, and have peace of mind in the meantime. Just a thought.

 

Could definitely be the compressor cycling on & off that causes the "kick" feeling. Does it happen with climate control off? I'd check the serpentine/accessory drive belt condition.

 

At 80,000 miles, you are approaching spark plug & PCV valve change time. Especially if a lot of driving is city or stopngo traffic.

I will try explain as much as possible. :reading::reading::reading:
On low speed when I hold gas pedal in one position and transmission shift from one speed to another I feel little delay or sometimes no delay but a little kick. Another issue is when I accelerate little bit aggressively and then abruptly let go gas pedal I feel kick. That's the problems that I have.
About kick on traffic lights, I never feel that car sways with climate control off, but when it's on, sometimes it's so terrible :doh: , car sways back and forth.
BTW thanks for info about spark plugs & PCV valve I didn't thought about them. :victory::victory::victory:

Change the plugs and clean the TB while you are changing the plugs.

How is better to clean it? use mass air flow cleaner or disassemble TB and then clean?
