I have an issue that has been going on for a couple of years now in my 2010 Limited (now 70k mls) and has been driving my wife and I bonkers! Though I'd ask if anyone else has experienced the same. It only occurs when driving over 65mph and head-in to the wind, but it is a rattling noise coming from the passenger side behind the glove compartment. When we open the glove compartment the noise becomes much louder so that's how I know it is somewhere back there. It almost sounds like a piece of tin clattering up against another piece of tin. But only when air is being forced into the engine compartment (or from up underneath). I can't find a single loose item in the engine compartment or from below. I almost think it is a door flap in the HVAC tubing somewhere but I thought that is all plastic. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! enigma-2 Posted June 10, 2016 Report Share Posted June 10, 2016 (edited) Rattle soulds have a way of coming from one place and traveling to a different part of the car. I would start by looking under the car at the catolitic converter heat shield or a metal bracket supporting a body panel (esp the panel under the passenger door). As it's "speed sensitive" I would expect you find the metallic part nearly tight, but just loose enough to generate sold due to buffeting. For a bracket, remove the plastic fastener, slightly bend the bracket and reinstall the fastener. This will put extra tension on the parts and make the assy tighter. For a heat shield, sometimes the thin mounting tabs break and allow the shield the vibrate under specific loading conditions. rpeary Posted June 13, 2016 Author Report Share Posted June 13, 2016 Thanks everyone for your comments. I did try all of these over the weekend. Couldn't find anything loose on the underside or behind the glove compartment after removing. However, this made me remember that my Ford dealer had replaced the passenger side fender a while back after someone hit me. Since this sound is coming from exactly that area, I have significant enough reason to believe this has something to do with it. Either a bolt came loose (or not installed) or heck, maybe they left a tool in there, who knows. Will have to see if they are willing to have a look or maybe I tear it apart myself.
