Noises!! A couple new noises have developed.

Recommended Posts

I got my edge August 2015 and never heard these noises before!

Noise #1 sounds like something rattling in a plastic cup holder -It of course is not. It isn't constant and it isn't loud but it has been happening now for 3 or 4 months. My daughter thinks it is coming from where the seat belt meets on the back drivers side.

Noise #2 is new and annoying -- it sounds like an old creaking school bus! Definitely coming from the back roof area -- It has the pano sunroof so maybe something there? Again it does not happen all the time but when it does I feel like I am on the bus again :/ that creaking sound they make when turning corners or on bump roads.

I tried to get video with my phone but it didn't work well so will try tomorrow with my actual camera.
I am new to owning a new car so not sure if it is something the dealership will help with or not.

Will search the forums and get video tomorrow but figured I would post just in case someone could restore my sanity sooner!

It is a 2015 ford edge sel -- wrong section!! Just realized -- sorry :/

I have the cupholder rattle. Try jamming a business card between where the top of the cupholder meets the shiny trim. It has (mostly) stopped it for now, but I'll be taking it to the dealer.

Regarding the rear rattle - it could be a number of things. Dealer lubricated my hatch and other seals and that seemed to stop it.

Best of luck. Rattles can be annoying but remember that they're going to happen in any car.

Thanks all -- I have checked the doors/ cup holders under seats, on seat -- all storage type area's. My daughter thinks it is coming from between the pano roof and edge of the roof back drivers side. I had her take this video and you can hear it a bit -- wish I could remove the road noise better but at least maybe someone can identify with this sound. Reminds me of an old creaking school bus when they turn corners...lol

It is intermittent though as it didn't happen yesterday until about 5 minutes after driving. I promise it sounds much more loud and annoying then the video captures!

I've been able to eliminate the Pano creak and the dreaded cup holder rattle. But I can't figure out the rattle that's in the sunglass holder/overhead light area. I have the lane departure so I have the really large cover on the windshield also. Anyone have a clue?

How did you resolve the sunroof creak? Mine's starting to do it.

I find it is more in warm weather then cold!

I took mine in and it was there for about 8 hours. They said they had to remove the whole header. About 1/2 hour after I Ieft I heard the noise again. It was intermittent but still there. We were heading out of town so I couldn't bring it back but let them know it was still happening. After we got back it would happen here and there but not as often and for long. As the weather got cooler (less humid) I stopped noticing it. Throw in a humid day here and there I would here it. Now that it has cooled right off I don't hear it anymore.

Hopefully in the summer if it starts they can figure it out!

So i solved mine tonight.

Background - i noticed a snappy clicking noise coming from the roof in the last few weeks. I normally leave the sunshade open and the roof in ventilation mode.

At first it was pretty rare but as the temperature has cooled, it's persisted more. The wife helped and noticed that if she put pressure on the little rubber molding right above where the sunshade sits when closed, the noise went away. I duplicated this while driving. Put a little pressure on the plastic molding where the shade rests and the clicking snapping noise stopped.

Now you're probably thinking its the magnets that hold the headliner to the roof sheet metal. But it wasn't.

So i opened the sunroof and sat on the center console and started poking around. I noticed that there is insulation that runs along between the headliner and moonroof the entirety of the perimeter of the panel. So using a interior pry tool, i managed to unsnap the front two magnets and started messing with that insulation. Sure enough, its glued onto the roof and the right side looked like it was rolling towards the front of the car. Why i don't know, but when i pushed down and released, the glue would make that same stupid noise. The colder the glue, the more snappy and loud the noise would be. Makes sense now as the weather has gotten colder.

So i wasn't sure what to do. Wedging something in there to put pressure on the insulation would help keep it in place, but the insulation is very thin, maybe 1/4" wide and a 1/4" thick. I really don't know what it's purpose is except maybe to keep dirt out of that area.

After messing a bit I decided to just remove it. I removed the entirety of the insulation along the front of the moonroof. I had some window a/c insulation foam lying around that was about the same length and shoved it in there. This foam was 1-1/2" thick and I knew would serve the same purpose and not move especially since there was no glue and it was held in place via pressure.

Went for a test drive and sure enough, no noise. Was quite nice.

Pics below to help show what i did. Sorry but it was very difficult to capture the best photos. Hope this helps if anyone is willing to take this on or even point the dealership in this direction. I could easily see that glue making the noise anytime the headliner moves which could really occur anywhere around the perimeter of the moonroof panel.
