Any word on Android Auto for 2016 Edge?

Recommended Posts

I have a feeling they'll pull a Kia/Hyundai. Ford has said all their 2017 models (I think with Sync3) will ship with Carplay/AA. Given that the 2017 Edge starts production/shipping October of 2016 (?), Ford will probably have a few months after that when they finally release it for the 2016's. At least that's what Kia and Hyundai did. (about 3 months after they shipped the vehicles with it, they're releasing the map updates to get the feature in the 2016 years).

From what I have heard the update is ready...its the carplay USB that is the hold up. The update should be released so those with Android Auto can use it. I am not one that would use AA by the way, I just don't think its fair to withhold it based on the Carplay USB hubs not being ready to be released yet (they have to stock them).

Can you look in the settings under about verison and see if you have v1 or v2? I'm thinking of switching to android and if v1 has it that would be coll

I have 2.0.

My issue with AA is any time it is enabled, the voice commands are for AA, not for the vehicle. As in, if I want to change the temp, or switch audio sources, it won't work.

That is how it is designed. You are running a different system when you go into CarPlay or AA and you lose SYNC functionality such as that.

Yep, and I am not a fan of that setup. Hopefully it gets better with future updates.

That's going to require significant work for the system to figure out whether your voice command is for the vehicle or the attached device. It would almost have to pass any unrecognized command to the attached device - even if you just mispronounced something it didn't recognize.

What they'd probably need to do is have a keyword such as "vehicle" that diverts voice recognition to the vehicle temporarily.

Or they need a way to switch AA on and off, so to speak. Even if I exit out of AA, all voice commands go to AA vis Sync.

That's the same problem the 2009 Nav systems had, the nav and climate were all on a separate voice system from Sync. That's why with those systems you always had to say a keyword first, like USB, Phone, Climate, Radio and so on, then wait for a prompt to say the second part of the command.

I'm really not seeing the benefits to these system yet. Besides getting phone interface on the screen??

Currently with just have phone connected to Bluetooth I have access to my music, I have access to pandora and Spotify, and most importantly I can use sync voice commands as well as Siri? Short press on voice button is sync hold for 2 seconds gets me Siri.

What could possibly be so great about CarPlay/AA that makes me lose features like that?

I use Siri for voice to text all the time she is great, same with reading back messages, or using her to make a call. I use sync for other commands

You raise some good points. The only advantage I can see with Android Auto is the ability to read and send Google Hangouts messages, navigate with Google Maps and the ability to access podcasts through the infotainment system. Supposedly you'll be able to use Waze via AA at some point, but it hasn't come to fruition yet.

IMHO, if you can safely access your phone while driving, i.e. its mounted in a convenient location, AA/Carplay doesn't have any great advantages.....yet. Well, unless your vehicle doesn't have Nav....
