Car acting crazy....help!!

I've had my (purchased used) Edge for a year now with no problems (50K miles). Last week my wife stopped to fill the tank and when she turned the key back on, the car wouldn't start, the seat moved back and forth, interior lights went on & off and door locks locked and unlockled. We had AAA tow it to the nearest dealer. They got in the car and drove it off the truck... car did fine! They kept it overnight, driving it about 20 miles, and put it on their computer. It did fine and all systems checked ok. Next day(late Friday) we picked it up and drove to eat....did perfectly. When we got home, the same thing happened except this time it would restart when I turned the key, but wouldn't die when I turned off and removed the key. I had to disconnect the battery to kill the engine. Monday morning I reconnected the battery and the car did fine! Dealer says until they actually see the problem occuring they can't fix it, as all the systems checked out ok. What should I do now??

I don't have any aftermarket accessories on the car. I checked the battery with my own battery load tester and it check out perfect....no battery issues. I had thought it may be a glitch in either the lock or the ignition system, but the dealership hasn't contacted me after a couple of days. Hope they're not giving it the 'sunbath' treatment! I'll see what they have to say the first of the week.

Based on your description I would suspect three elements which could be related to both conditions. First (and foremost) is a faulty ignition switch. Should you experience another "non-shutoff" I would try this. After turning off and the car conines to run, remove the key, then turn the key back to the run position, then to off. If it then turns off, it's definitely the ignition switch.

The second is that the wiring has developed either a short or an open. Possibly a corroded conbection.

The third is the module that controls the ignition system, think it's the body control module.

Well, I took the car to another Ford dealer....it started fine and drove there ok. They kept it for a week, driving it about every day, checked all the wires for rodent chewing, etc., ran computer diagnostics on everything, and the only thing they could find was a loose negative battery cable. The work was done by a mechanic I trust, and he said if they don't see the malfunction, they can't do anything. He tightened the cables and we picked up he car. We've had it for about three weeks now, driving it every day in rain & shine, and it runs fine....haven't had any problems of this nature. Only problem we've had with the car is that sometimes the rear lights won't turn off when we stop the car--we had that problem long before the other one...restarting the car seems to stop it. Just in case--we've renewed our 100 mile AAA towing subscription!

Exceptions include if you have shifter-related messages (SHIFT TO PARK), an errant CD player, or a DOOR AJAR error, among others.

 

WWW - I posted recently about the "door ajar" indicator problem returning (http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/10869-door-ajar-warning-on-at-all-times/).

 

Now, also in the past few days, I've had the "shift to park" message a couple of times now, plus a CD in the player that won't budge (eject) :doh:. The CD player has only been used a few times in 5 years (mostly iPod or Sirius for music).

 

Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

You started having issues with shift to park when it got cold outside right? Just jiggle or wiggle the shift lever and it should clear the light. Had this issue in my 2011 when it was really cold.

 

If the CD player is stuck then you may have to replace it or just leave it and never use it again. Based on your statement I would just forget about it. Who uses CD's anymore anyway? My 8 Track work great!!!

 

Have you taken the time to go to safecar.gov and register your door latch as an official complaint? If not please do so as this is a growing concern and the more people register their complaints the stronger the case will be for Ford to take some sort of action.

Well, it happened one more time. I took it to the dealer, and the mechanic (who is pretty good) found that leaves had totally plugged the area above the computer. He said they were keeping the computer wet, and that prob. contributed to the problem. He cleaned out the leaves and urged us to keep an eye on the leaf buildup. We haven't had any of those problems since. Go figure!

Interesting! I added some washer fluid yesterday, and there was a small buildup of leaves on both sides. I cleaned them out, and today no problem with several shut-offs. (It's only happened upon turning off the engine)
