2016 Edge Parking Sensors False Alarm

Recommended Posts

My 2016 Edge's left side sensors keep giving false alarms.

Whenever parking, even when something is far away, it shows complete left side as red on the screen.

Its random : sometimes the problem goes away completely but sometimes it starts showing red even when I am on the road stopped at red light.

Maybe moisture or loose connection inside.

I would like to see the wiring/fuse etc. to see if something obvious. Any idea where to look ?

Dont want to visit the dealer unless absolutely required.

Do you have lane sensing? Or the other lane assist feature? Maybe sensitivity on those is a little to high and it's picking up a vehicle in lane next to you pulling up to light? Not entirely sure how that system works as I don't have it. But a suggestion none the less prior to dealer visit.

I know when I've turned my edge around in driveway rather quickly it went nuts on me thinking some bushes next to driveway was cross traffic. Just some ideas like I said. I could be entirely off though

Thats a good suggestion.

Yes I do have those features (part of Adaptive cruise control + drivers package).

I will play around with the lane sensing on & off.

But I guess lane sensing uses camera and not the ultrasonic sensors used by parking alarms.

I will try it anyways.

I think it actually uses its own sensors that are located along the sides of bumpers. (Vaguely recall reading manual on this). It stated to not cover them with anything. Not sure if you have bumper stickers / or a 3M type clear protector that may be obstructing it too.

Hopefully it's something small like that, saves a trip to dealer!

This is probably not helpful, Ford states the system may malfunction if

A foreign object (such as a bike rack or trailer) is attached to the front or rear of your vehicle or at another location close to the sensors.

An overhanging object (such as a surfboard) is attached to the roof.

The front bumper or side sensors are damaged or obstructed by a foreign object (such as a front bumper cover).

A mini-spare tire is in use.

The side obstacle detection on newer Fords works by estimating the distance of an obstacle after it was detected by the front/rear side sensors. In other words, if you are parked & a stroller or a karts comes from the side at a door, the sensors will not detect it. Only if the car was moving & the front side sensors detected it, then it will estimate how close this object is to the side of the car as you move on. That's the reason why in the owners manual, "Side Sensing System", it states the following:

The side sensing system may not be available until you have driven approximately the length of your vehicle in order for the system to reinitialize if: You switch the ignition on, off and back on.

Your vehicle remains stationary for over two minutes.

The anti-lock brake system is activated.

The traction control system is activated.

Ok, so what I mean, if the vehicle suddenly detects something from the side, as you explained, while stopped at the light, I'd say it is a module issue, not simple wiring and/or moisture on the sensors. Take it to the dealer.

  • 2 years later...

I have this same issue happening. Mine warns that there is something on the left side big enough to have the 2 red bars light up for both driver side doors. It happens usually with the first couple stops after sitting for roughly 8 hours...but it doesn't happen all the time, not even weekly. When it happens I still look to see if anything is there but there is nothing...not even a small tree branch. I've taken it to the dealer but they couldn't reproduce the issue. Also it seems to happen only in cooler weather
