Edge vs. Santa Fe Sport vs Sorento - update

Funny we looked at the Santa Fe, and Sorento. I liked the Sorento features but when I sat in it. The headroom was lacking, once inside I felt like if I hit a bump in the road I would be bumping my head on the roof of the car. The pull up shades up front were nice, wish Ford had that (hint for Ford). Also to me the Sorento front end looked nice but the back was kind of ugly.

 

The Santa Fe in front almost looks like the Edge but it looked small and crampy to me. I never drove it but hear Hyundai is a solid vehicle. Plus I didn't like the interior much of either the Kia or Hyundai, even the other American made cars were kind of plane Jane inside.

 

We decided why not buy American, or at least American brand. I think the Edges are made in Mexico now? I just felt like it was time to ditch the imports and give them a shot. Plus the Ford Edge exterior is stylish when I see it parked out in front of the house compared to other SUV's on my street it is the best looking one out there (though I am biased). The interior of the Egde is clean and classy. I really liked the look of the Titanium and Sport level interiors.

 

No matter what else I looked at I always went back to the Edge.

Does the Hyundai product feel substantial or creaky? How is the road noise? This has been a very serious problem in the past for them. What about the quality of the materials inside? This has been a problem for them as well, interiors didn't hold up. I am also looking at the 2017 gmc acadia. Because it has 42 cu ft. In the cargo area.

 

Sorry for the delay. I haven't had any creaking/noises, although in all the vehicles I test drove, if you opened the power shade (but left the sunroof closed), and there was a strong wind, you could hear the vinyl rails creak a little or hear them as the sun heated things up.

 

The top-end Santa Fe Sport has a lot of nice leather, although the dash is some softer plastic, but the "grooving" can make it interesting to clean, although some 303 sprayed on a microfiber cloth (vs. spraying on the dash) works quite well. My roomate's 2014 SFS still is quiet and no creaking/noises. I will admit the Edge had nicer seats and a well-designed interior. Again, if the dealers in my area had been willing to deal, I would've taken the Ford, but I couldn't justify an $11-12k price differential.

 

After a few months now I will say that the road noise is probably the biggest deficiency (but I knew this going on) on the Hyundai. But I could spend $2k on some professionally installed sound dampening and get something as quiet as the Ford in that case (well except for the acoustic glass). Again, about a 4db difference between the two.

It's not a new thing... the Oakville plant made Aerostar and Freestar minivans starting in the mid '90s and before that I think they were making the Escort or some similar small car.

 

The Oakville plant opened in 1973, and started making the Custom 500.

 

The Hermosillo plant opened in 1988 making the Mazda 323, Mercury Tracer and Ford Escort.

Interestingly, I did not know that the Oakville plant also made the Lincoln MKT and Ford Flex along with the MKX and Edge. The MKT and Flex are not even on the same platform as the Fusion based MKX and Edge. I don't mind so much when it comes to who makes it so long as it is us, the Canadians, or Mexicans at the Hermosillo plant which has one of the best track records of any assembly plant in the world. I believe the workers at the Oakville plant are worried because the future of the MKT and Flex is very uncertain at this point. Both cars have little demand outside of livery service and it has been rumored for a very long time now that those models will probably get the axe.
