2007 MKX w/Nav options

Recommended Posts

The wife and I just picked up a 2007 MKX. It has the THX audio and navigation. One thing I guess I didn't really research ahead of time was the Bluetooth/sync. I have a 2010 Fusion and love my sync, and use it daily. I want to get something similar in the MKX for my wife so she can have hands free, and be able to stream music from her phone, since we primarily use Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, podcasts, etc for audio entertainment. We also do audiobooks, which is really all I listen to in the car anymore.

Anyway, I'd just like to understand all of my options before I decide which route to go. From what I understand, the 2008 and newer either have, or can have navigation + Bluetooth. I'm not sure if '08 is when Sync came out, but I'm assuming so. Can I just find a 2008 headunit and swap it? I'd imagine there would be some customization with wiring, but that's not a problem. Will any unit up until 2010 fit? What about newer models? I understand that while technically "anything" is possible, I am trying to keep this within reason. I'd like to maintain factory appearance, but would opt for an Alpine CarPlay unit if that would just be easier.

Appreciate any input, and look forward to getting involved around here!

Interesting. Thanks for posting. What's funny is that it lead me back to my roots! There were a couple posts linked to the Ford Explorer forums, which was the first forum I joined 10+ years ago!

I figured I may have to look at other Ford platforms where there is a larger audience to see what was going on over there, I just hadn't gotten to that point yet. It does seem possible, and while I would probably rather go with a CarPlay unit, I think if I can get sync, that would be the way to go and maintain the OEM look. We'll see.

If you're worried about aftermarket looking bad you really should get your stuff from Crutchfield. They cost al little more but their support and installation accessories are first rate. I got a Jensen unit from them to replace the original 6 disk player. Great Nav, great phone blue tooth, without voice activation. the Pandora option needs to hooked up with your I phone plug which I don't really like, but I have this head unit in the car for over a year and it has been flawless. I think they have updated it since I got it.

I definitely wouldn't say that I'm worried about it looking bad, I just prefer the look of "stock" but also want the functionality of something else. If I go the way of aftermarket, I'd probably go with the Alpine ILX-007. Installed one of those last year in a friends Avalanche, it was simple, the interface is easy since it's CarPlay and since this is my wife's car, the easier the better (haha). I will have to research the difference in software between what I have and the newer Nav models. The 2007 is painful to use.

I have the 2007 also ---- and what I did was get this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0176G5TRO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It plugs into a USB port plugged into the 12V socket and the line in. Nice thing is both are located in the center console. I changed that 12V outlet to be switched to the ignition as well.

$20 cant be beat too much ---- make sure you get one of those ground loop isolators to remoce static.
