Good morning all, first time forum member post. I am looking for the TSB that refers to the PTU fluid change. I have looked but cannot seem to find it. I have the NHSTA 10057723 and ASI 44649 numbers. The edge started puking heavy black fluid from vent on top of PTU. Ford service said PTU overfilled. I would be great full for any help. thxs Mschluns

Welcome mschluns, sorry to hear about the PTU issue. How many miles on your Edge? You are out of warranty?

Good time to R&R the PTU fluid, and establish a regular fluid change schedule. Check the old fluid first, there should not be anything other than fine metallic shavings from normal wear & tear in there. A lab test would be more definitive. There is no drain plug, so you would drain & fill from the same hole.

A couple of people have also added the extended PTU vent, which is a kit available for the Taurus. The vent extends into the engine compartment, giving the fluid more room to expand, but also protecting the PTU from high water situations.

I have 44,000 miles on her. I have since sucked out and filled the PTU twice. I used valvoline syn 75w-140. I am going to change it one more time but switch to Mobil 1 syn. On the second change the oil was much more viscous and the terrible odor not near as potent. I replied to another post on the PTU fluid change and wrote how I did it. Second time I did it in 45 minutes. I looked into having the oil checked from the first removal but it was costly.. $140 per sample.

Try this lab. 25 bucks or so for a testing of your sample. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
