Looking for advice on new A/S tires - Michelin Premier LTX?

Hi,

I need to replace the OE tires on my 2011 Edge Limited that has the 20" wheels.

I believe the OE are Pirelli Scorpion. I want to replace again with a A/S. The car is driven in the Chicago area. So, winter/ice traction is not unimportant.

Looking at review on the rack I came across the Michelin Premier LTX.

Does anyone use this tire here? Any other recommendations?

I had Michelin LTX's on my previous Explorer. Fantastic tire. Good traction on dry and wet. We don't get a lot of snow here in DFW (only a few days a season) but great traction on ice. Also, they wear evenly and have xlnt tread life. Be aware that even though the tire is labeled 'LTX' it is not a light truck tire. The name may contain 'LT' but it is a 'P' passenger rated tire.

I recently replaced the Michelins on my wife 2012 Edge with Yokohama Geolanders, always pleased with the Yokohama tires. At the time of writing this post, I have 3 vehicles in my driveway with Yokohama tires on them. I recommend Yokohama tires to all my family and friends.

Slightly off (this) topic, was at my dealer today, service rep came into the waiting room and we talked about several things.

Tires came up and he was telling me about this guy who has an 2016 Edge Sport with 22" wheels. He just replaced another tire last week, second one in two months of use.

Seems any nail or screw will always puncture the sidewall, ruining the tire. On a 20" or 18" it would be in the tread, but on the 22" it almost always hits the sidewall.

Said potholes will take out the 22" where a 20" will take the hit and keep going. Couple that with the rock hard drive and one would wonder why anyone would opt for the 22's.

That's the problem I had with a 20" Goodyear Eagle just a few weeks ago. Took a wood screw on what I thought was the tread on the left rear. TPS monitor came on. The manager at the tire store said that it penetrated enough of the sidewall that they would not repair it. Had to buy a new P245/50r/20 Goodyear Eagle RSA. Now, he could have been BS'ing me to sell just to sell a tire but I have been going to that same shop for many years and trust them, and he said pretty much what Enigma said.... that unless its dead center in the tread, almost any puncture will damage the sidewall making the tire irrepairable.

21's are the largest OEM option for the gen 2. Anyhow, it seems strange since the larger tires have a smaller sidewall. In my experience any car I've had with a lower profile tire (less sidewall), usually faired better when punctured since it was almost always in the tread. Maybe it was just luck on my part? Lol

We just got them installed last fall on our 2010. Took off the 6 year old Pirellis that were rock hard and had practically no wet traction left. The Premiers are nice tires- quiet and smooth, no complaints. We actually have traction in wet conditions now. We haven't really tired them in snow or ice yet since we haven't had any, but given the siping on them, they should be fine.

  • 3 weeks later...

Only have had a chance to drive them once in the snow - and they were way better than the stock Pirelli's! I personally hate Blizzak style tires because they are waaay to mushy feeling & unresponsive for my driving style. These Yoko's are more like the Michelin Pilot Alpin Sport winter tires I ran on my G37s.

About 7k miles with no visible treadware so far. Will keep you posted though

Was driving the Edge the other day in the rain and gave her some decent throttle off the line to get in front of a couple of cars in the other lane. No issues with wet traction anymore. With the old Pirellis it would have been spinning the tire, even if it was dry! Still haven't got to try them in any real snow or ice yet.
