Engage the crank lever under the radiator at the front of the car, slowly turning it a quarter-turn clockwise to prime the carburetor with fuel. Get into the car. Insert the ignition key, turning the setting to either magneto or battery. Adjust the timing stalk upward to retard the timing. Move the throttle stalk downward slightly for an idle setting. Pull back on the hand brake (which also places the car in neutral.) Return to the front of the car. Use your left hand to crank the lever (if the engine backfires and the lever swings counterclockwise, the left arm is less likely to be broken). Give it a vigorous half-crank, and the engine should start. Next enter the car and prepare to drive. Familiarize yourself with the controls. A steering wheel, three pedals on the floor, a hand brake and two levers. The brake pedal is in the far-right position (where you would normally find the accelerator pedal). Thr gear selector pedal selects either first gear (which is all the way to the floor), neutral (about half-way out & used for stopping) and second gear (all the way out). Next to the gear selector pedal, you'll find a separate reverse gear pedal. Next the hand levers. With your left hand you'll be adjusting the firing of the spark plugs (down to advance and up to retard), With your right hand you'll control the throttle (down to open and up to close). Also make certain you are dressed for driving. First it's fully air conditioned. Plenty of fresh air. And heated too, if you bring enough blankets. Like to listen to music as you drive? Bring a friend who has a good voice. Stop for lunch? Bring a picnic basket full of stuff. (Healthier too.) Fill up with gasoline. Pull into the station next to the pump. Pay for you gas. Connect the hose to your gas tank. Pump the handle back and forth until you have the proper amount in the glass globe. Believe 5 gal is what the hold. Open the drain and it drains into your tank. Rehang hose and your off. (Haven't been to a station like this since the 90's, so doing this from memory.)
