Hey All,

Just bought our first FORD ever...always had the stigma of F.O.R.D= Fix, Or, Repair, Daily. We bought a used 2011 Ford Edge Limited...it's a beautiful car with a bit of mileage on it 90,114, but 1 owner. Took it to an independent garage for a review and they gave it a thumbs up. Curious on thoughts, cautions, and what to look out and prepare for with this...we have had bad luck with used cars and hoping this one based on reviews we have read is th answer to our car concerns. Thank you all and looking forward to our new purchase!

Respect,

Buddylee

Welcome to the community, BuddyLee, nice ride! The first thing I have to ask is do you have a Ford extended warranty. It is hard to say if the miles are highway or city miles, what the balance is, but a lot of people give up their rides either becoz they are out of warranty, or major but routine maintenance is beginning to crop up. Coolant, spark plug, and pcv valve come to mind right away. A drain and fill of the transmission fluid is also highly advisable. This will give you a known starting point, and worryfree miles of smiles.

Is your Edge AWD?

Although ford doesnt recommended changing the (PTU) fluid (AWD) it's been found that the fluid in these units can leak throught the seal and get gooie. (Couldn't think the right word, sorry). Anyway the PTU doesn't get lubricated properly and fails. (Think $$$). It would be a good idea to have your local dealer check the PTU seals and change the fluid. Not all dealers will change the fluid as it's not a recommended procedure and it's a pita to pump out the old and refill. If they don't, try a local professional transmission shop, which will have no problem. (Money well spent). Best to change the fluid every 30k or so, just to be safe.

Also recommend changing the transmission fluid and cooling system coolant. (Your dealer will do these). Change the plugs if you gave 90k or more (gap gets too wide, causes too much current to be drawn through the coils and they can fail).

What enigma mentions is exactly what I went through when I bought my '11 Limited AWD in Sept. Had 65k miles on it - about average. I have completed a coolant flush/fill, ATF drain/refill, brake fluid suction/refill, PS fluid suction/refill and will soon be doing a PTU lube oil suction/refill. Not sure if I am going to do that one myself or have my shop do it. Keep an eye on the PTU as any leakage needs to be addressed asap. Engine oil is not due for a change until 71k miles - coming up soon. I don't know what oil it has in it now, but I am going to do it with Mobil-1 5w-20 Hi Mileage full syn and a Mobil-1 Extended Performance filter. I am also going to install a Fumoto Qwik Valve (had one on my Explorer and loved it.) You might also check the cabin air filter, and the engine air filter. RDU (aka differential) on the AWD calls for a drain/refill at 100k so that'll be a while.

Congrats on the new ride! It's really a fantastic automobile.
