Prospective buyer 2017 Edge Sport with Questions

I am looking at the 2017 Ford Edge Sport and have some questions about it. I am currently driving a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland V6 4x4.

How good is the quality of the edge? Does it hold up after years? Do rattles, squeaks, noises develop after time or is the Edge a solid build? The 2016 sport I test drove had a buzz from somewhere which concerned me.

With remote start are there ways to set climate control, heated/ventilates seats and heated steering wheel to come on? On my Jeep 40 or below heated drivers seat, steering wheel and defrost all come on with it, and if 80 or higher AC and ventilated seat turn on.

How is the Sport with AWD and standard factory tires in snow?

Does the pano roof rattle? How does it do when open? Still on the fence about the feature but my Jeeps has been rock solid.

How is the mpg people get with the 2.7l?

On the remote start the answer is yes for climate control and the steering wheel. I'm not 100% sure on the seats.

Quality is average with some vehicles being almost perfect and some having fit and finish issues and other assorted issues. Most are fixed with a dealer visit.

Engineering issues with the adaptive steering and water leaks and sync 3 seem to be fixed now so shouldn't be an issue on new ones.

Squeaks and rattles aren't really an issue as they age - but some are delivered with them. Once again that's usually a one time fix.

Long term issues are the PTU on AWD vehicles - seems to be improved but regular fluid changes are recommended. Suspension bits can wear out - control arms, etc. Door latches were an issue on the previous gen - remains to be seen on the 2015+ - so far so good on that one. The water pump is internal on the 3.5L engine and that can be expensive but that won't be an issue on the 2.7L Turbo.

BAMR (big ass moon roof - engineering's nickname) is usually solid - only a few folks have reported a rattle. A few have shattered but all these failures or issues seem to be normal with most not having issues. From a functionality standpoint's it's fantastic.

Definitely not perfect but even those with a few issues would probably say it's worth it if you like the vehicle otherwise.

Thank you. I am reading something about the ventilated seats having an issue with weak cooling at least on the backs, do you know if this is still an issue?

As for the heated steering wheel, be nice to know if turns on during cold weather automatically but regardless how hard is it to turn it on manually? I have grown to appreciate the heated steering wheel option more than even the heated seats.

I should say my jeep during what it considers cold/hot weather turns on all those features as needed be it remote start or regular start.

Yes the weak cooling on the seatbacks is still there. Try it for yourself and see if it's a problem for you or not. I don't think they'll have a real fix for it until next year at the earliest. For us it's not a big deal.

The manual switch for the steering wheel is on the main climate control screen. So hit Climate on the bottom row menu then you can toggle it on and off.

If you are not self employed, check with your employer about any special deals they may have with Ford. I get Ford X-Plan pricing through my employer. Next time I buy new I x-plan to use it. heh. Also, if you are a member of a credit union you might check with them about special pricing or financing options. Invoice pricing is all over the net. Just google it. I think Ford.com has a configurator so you can get specific about the particular vehicle you want. Do that, then get invoice pricing, and walk in to a dealer and see if they have what you want on the lot. If they do, offer them a 5 over deal on the spot and see what they say. If not, see what available through a dealer trade. Let the games begin!

I can confirm the Heated seats do come on with remote start in cold weather also. My 16 Sport is very good in snow with the factory tires, but I'm sure a winter compound would be better. Very good traction on newly wet roads also. I haven't had a problem with the cooled seats, the soft leather is more comfy in hot and cold than harder leather for me.

So took a test drive in a new 2016 and 2017 Edge sport and here are my impressions -

I like all the features of the vehicle. Driving it has good power and firm ride, very planted on the highway. Around town bumps rock it a bit but it doesn't get to where it's bouncing all over.

Some gripes I have are

Major - Steering wheel is angled too much to my liking, after 15-20 minute test drive my shoulders were complaining from trying to hold the wheel. Tried adjusting the tilt/telescoping but just couldn't find a spot it felt good. I usually have found for my build I like where the wheel is not angled as much and closer to straight up and down. The Edge isn't the only car I have had this issue with, be nice there was a way to adjust the angle of the steering wheel.

Odd noises - both the 2016 and 2017 had noises from rattles, to groans and thunks. Wind noise from rear door area. I know some people find their Edge to have no odd noises and others have said they hear them but was disappointing.

Minor - Touchscreen and controls can be a far reach and some of the hard buttons are small, Heated seats had a loud fan noise, checked and ventilated seat was not on, had to shut it off completely to get rid of fan noise. Also the ventilated seat on full is very loud.

Overall it's a nice car with a lot going for it, just not sure I would be able to live with it due the steering wheel angle and if rattles/noises happen.

Just so you know both heated and cooled seat settings use the fan - it blows over a peltier device to create the heat and cooling.

Ok hmm when we turned off the heated seat and then turned it back on we no longer heard the fan. I must say the high and medium setting that fan is very loud (passenger seat) and had me wondering what the heck I was hearing when i had the car parked and radio off..

My 16 rattles.

Moonroof rattles. Hatch rattles. Dash/windshield rattles.

I've fixed the hatch and moonroof mostly. I still get a banging popping noise when the roof is in ventilation mode.

I have no clue what is causing the snap/crack sounds from the windshield area.

AWD is fine for winter. Of course, a good set of winter tires matters more than AWD.

My mileage is around 21 combined. It's ok. Not as good as I hoped considering the small engine.

PTU needs fluid changes to stay solid.

If you get adaptive steering, you may have issues. My steering wheel had to be replaced.

Fit and finish is poor as well. I have multiple interior panels that are way off. I've compared to other 2nd gen edges that are not. My driver's door was sagging and hitting the rear door when closed and the top of the rear passenger door was sticking out at the top.

Honestly, if i knew then what i know now, especially the lack of aftermarket support. i'd buy something else. Yes it has a lot of features for the money but if you have any OCD about fit, finish, or reliability, look elsewhere.

wut?

where do you get your info dude?

anyway, no the heated seats do not use a fan. it's a warming element inside the seat with 3 levels of intensity.

the cooling seat directs air into the seat using the a/c and fan. Due to the seat design, not much air gets to the back so most of the cooling will be in the seat, not the back.

Sorry but you are completely wrong.

There is no ducting from the A/C to the seats and there is no heating element inside the seats. There is a fan and a peltier device on each seat that does both the heating and cooling. This debuted on the 2003 Lincoln LS and Aviator.

Google it.

Akirby, you're right, for front seats with cooling & heating. Those with front heated seats only (SE/SEL and base Titanium/Sport) I believe have the old fashioned heating elements. Also, if equipped, rear heated seats are with heating elements.

Dug into this more. Older designs used a/c refrigerant and fans to flow air through the seat (ducting). I see why what i said was misleading. it's not a pipe directly from an a/c vent using the main condenser but I think that's been done too.

I did find and read through this article.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling

Interesting that the cooled seats have the fans run, but the heated seats do not appear to. It technically still is a heating 'element' as the peltier device or thermoelectric cooler heats one side as the other cools when electricity is applied.

if a fan is activated when the heat cycle is turned on, it's not much, but when the cooled seat is activated, the fans in the seat kick on pretty high. The problem is the air is pulled in from under the seat into the seat but has no where to go which is why many complain the seat back doesn't cool.

I still am not sold on the heating and cooling being performed by the same peltier device. Be nice to see one of the these seats torn apart.

If you have heated and cooled seats it uses the peltier device and fan in each seat for both. The device is not in the seat upholstery - it's external with the fan. The fan does run when heat is selected. I can hear it on my MKX. If you only have heated seats (front or rear) then that still uses the electrical element in the seat, no fan.

The 2003 LS and Aviator and I presume the more recent old designs (Explorer, F150) worked just fine - no issue with airflow. The new design that debuted on the 2015 F150 does have an air exhaust issue which causes the seat back not too cool very well. It will require a redesign.

Thanks for the update. I like a lot about the 2017 Edge and good to know somethings are normal and some are not when I test drove it.

On my 09 MKX, the fan comes on low when the heat is turned on. You can hear it when the radio is off and I turn on the heat for the passenger seat. There's a quiet "whosh" and then the fan goes down low. Any higher and it would burn your nu*s off.

Not completely certain, but I believe the Ford and Lincoln used the same design; ie peltier element to both heat and cool the seats.

Note that both front seats have an air filter that need to be changed or cleaned over time. They're round, about 4"in diameter and near the center of the seat. Twist on/off.
