LorenAZ Posted February 9, 2017 Report Share Posted February 9, 2017 I just purchase a 2012 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost with 52k miles. I have used many brands of synthetic oils in my vehicles as well as gas additives. AND I am thinking of doing the same with the EB. However, I have not read or seen any articles on this forum, regarding these fluids being used in the 2.0L motor. Is there any problems using synthetics with this motor? I have had great success with the Amsoil products and would like to use them in my Edge. If you do use synthetics, what brands are you using? chefduane Posted February 10, 2017 Report Share Posted February 10, 2017 I exclusively use Mobil-1 5w-20 Hi-Mileage full synthetic engine oil with a Mobil-1 Extended Performance filter. ATF is Motorcraft Mercon LV only. Coolant is whatever is spec'd but brand doesn't matter. I got 213k out of my Explorer (sold) and have 116k on our Trailblazer (still driving) doing this and don't plan to change. I run a bottle of Techron through each vehicle every few months - anything else is just snake oil. For gas additives, I use Chevron 65740 Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner. If you use gasoline with Ethanol in it, remember that it starts to break down in as little as 30 days in hot weather. And it draws water to itself, accumulating in the tank. In winter it can separate and freeze. Best to throw in a can of Heet in the late fall to get rid of ant water in the tank. Use the $30 service which the includes synthetic blend, rotate tires and look over. The synthetic blend is more than adaquate. Personally I would bump up to full synthetic is my engine was a turbo do to the increased heat. (My car has a 3.5). Just finished a run of 285 hrs (14,500 miles) on one change and filter. No noted difference between the last test at 200 hrs and 10K miles. AMSOIL is standing up. Going to go 350 hrs and over 20K miles this time. OH and the Edge is a 2011 with 182,000 miles on it. I will note that last test was only 90 days of driving. I was looking through their website and was wondering how the other products work in the Edge. Like the Power steering fluid, anti freeze, etc. I am looking for good reasons to use their products throughout my 2.0 L EcoBoost motor. Taxi companies base their oil change interval on actual testing. Believe they base changes on acidity and failure of certain additive breakdowns. Even though the oil is still lubricating properly, it would be advantageous to pulling some off the dipstick and watch the acidity. Also filter, even the best, have limits. When near at capacity, they may go into bypass and allow dirt to recirculate through the engine. As you experiment, it might be a good idea to monitor the level of contamination in the oil. enigma-2 Posted February 27, 2017 Report Share Posted February 27, 2017 (edited) I think it's normal to lose a quart between regular oil changes. I usually check once a month and top off when needed. (Keep a few quarts of Mobile One around for this). As your working beyond normal intervals, I wouldn't get too excited. Amazing how the oil is holding up. Have you considered a filter change? junehhan Posted February 27, 2017 Report Share Posted February 27, 2017 When it comes to oil consumption, I think it is as much the luck of the draw as it is the kind of engine you have. Lower volatility means that you may see less oil loss with less viscosity change when running a top of the line synthetic. However, some engines are just different. If you think a quart during an oil change interval is bad, you have not seen the BMW 4.4 litre v8's, GM LS7 v8, Honda S2000 2.0 I4, as well as Porsche engines from back in the day. My S2000 went through 2 quarts every 3000 miles or so although I did give it the 9300rpm wack every day. FWIW, I would avoid running any fuel additives in an Ecoboost and would just stick to top tier brands. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Pre fill the filter prior to installation. If you intend to use an EaO 26 filter get the filter cap wrench which will make installation and removal real easy. Im just curios as the old eao51 was replace by the smaller 51k and Im just wondering why. If its the same than the added oil would be awsome. Ive only run amsoil in my stuff since 2000. All changed at the 15,000 mile severe service. All made it over 260,000 with alimony no oil consumption. Only on my rs and meth injected truck so I change it at 50 percent oil life as meth can really do a number on oil at the rate I spray mine. The trans fluid also works great.
