I'm again having transmission issues see topic in FWD section, and also having issues with the vista roof, and seem to be losing coolant somewhere because every 5-7000 miles it has lost some from the reservoir. My question is how many items should i bring up at a visit. Due to past dealer experiences this can be touchy again see transmission issue post in FWD section. Thanks for the thoughts. enigma-2 Posted March 5, 2017 Report Share Posted March 5, 2017 (edited) One possible explanation for loss of coolant is a faulty water pump. Immediately check your oil to see if it has a "milky color" on the dipstick. If it does, the water pump seal is leaking coolant into the oil pan, diluting the oil and will destroy the engine. It's also possible that you may be able to smell coolant in the oil if the amount of coolant is excessive. (Don't drive your car under these conditions, have it towed to a service shop.) Problems with a Vista Roof are usually traced to a lack of lubricant. MactFordEdge has an excellent YouTube video of how to properly clean and lubricate the tracks. I do oil changes every 5-7000 miles and it has never been milky or a different consistency. My dad things it is possibly a seal in the coolant cap that allows it to evaporate because it is not that much when it is losing it. The roof I do clean and oil every six months or so and that seems to help for about three. Maybe I just need to up the interval to three months. I know that I use my roof a lot more frequently than most people. I would say on average it is open at least once or twice a week (Bipolar West Texas Weather to Thank for that). But if the coolant loss happens over a short interval tho, you have an issue. Then definitely have the water pump confirmed good, because you don't want to pay for that job out of pocket. If you are, I wold be surprised that you even got three months out of it. Oil is the worst lubrication you can use. (Oil forms a film and attracts dirt and grime, the worst combination for this type of service). If you have never viewed Mact's video (part 1 is above) I really recommend it. The Lincoln service manual recommends the use of silicone spray. But I would only expect this to last about 6 months up a year. I use a light film of Super Lube. It's a synthetic oil that contains PTFE. A good clean rail should remain (fairly) clean for a year. (And in warm weathe t, I open and close my roof several times a day, I open it as soon ax I get in, close it whenever I park and always close it at night in the garage.
