revitus Posted April 20, 2017 Report Share Posted April 20, 2017 For 2016 - 2017 Edge Sport with Cold Weather Package, is there a physical button for activating the Heated Steering Wheel, or can it only be controlled through the touch screen infotainment interface? Also, if an Edge Sport is not equipped with the Cold Weather Package, can it be retro-fitted for this functionality? More specifically, is the steering wheel heating element present in all Edge Sport steering wheels, and Ford only activates the functionality for those who spec their build with the $350 CWP option? I'm in the market for a Gen II Edge Sport with 401A and Cold Weather Package... As I browse the local dealer inventory on-line, is there any way to tell from the interior dealer photos if the car is equipped with the Heated Steering Wheel? The descriptions on the dealer websites don't always seem perfectly accurate (rather generic at times), so I was wondering if there is a physical button for the Heated Steering Wheel or some other identifier that can help me determine if the car is equipped with the Cold Weather Package. KLinNBC Posted April 21, 2017 Report Share Posted April 21, 2017 I am totally speculating here, haven't seen the heated vs non-heated steering wheel. But I do have some knowledge and experience with production and engineering and I can say it's possible that all 2015+ Edges probably have the same (heat capable) wheel..The cost to embed the wire in the wheel for heating is peanuts, far less than the cost to produce two different wheels. I think. That said there are other,bigger issues including the wiring harness and programming as Nick mentioned. That may be costly or impossible to change: the wiring harness is integral and would require ripping out most of the interior and other bits to replace with the necessary harness. And you would be correct in pointing out that the cost of producing two different wiring harnesses (one little connector and 18" of wire) probably also exceeds the cost of simply using the same harness. But these days the word would get out, a simple panel pull and plug-in, a re-flash and you have the option for next to nothing that everyone else paid hundreds for. That's the reason you can't just activate the steering wheel heat with a simple hack: the company makes more money on the options than the do on the base vehicle. Don't they call it "One Ford" these days? Good point about the wiring harness. I won't attempt to retrofit one. I'll make sure to find one with the features I'm looking for. Thanks again! It may only be a few cents per wheel to add the heating element but multiply that by tens of thousands across just one vehicle line and the costs add up. It comes on automatically when it's cold and you use remote start so that reduces the need to turn it on manually. My Edge sleeps in my garage so I can't use remote start at home. They decided to add the front facing camera as a console button, which they could have just as easily hidden away in the Sync menus. We keep ours on the audio screen so even if it was on the home screen like you can do with Forscan it would be an extra button press. A hard button is obviously the best solution from a consumer standpoint but it's also more costly for Ford to have two different button configurations depending on the option package.
