Need Advice Edge w/ Vista Panoramic Roof roof rack for paddle board warranty

Recommended Posts

I just bought a used 2014 Ford Edge with a BAMR Vist Panoramic Roof. I have a 11'6 ft paddleboard (weighing 27lbs) and want to add a roof rack to haul it around. I have done some research on this board and other places and it seems that there are a few options.

Thule or Yamica clamp rack that clamps onto the doors

  • I like the idea that it is not permanent and that I can take it off when I am not using it, but, I am concerned that the placement of the bars will not work for my board since I cannot move the bars to accommodate the paddle board and that it will not be stable enough for the paddle board.

OEM Ford Rails and Thule/Yamica crossbar

  • Get OEM Ford Rails package for 2014 Edge and install the rails and then install a crossbar over it. I like this since the rails would be permanent and I wouldnt have to drill into the roof. And I could remove the crossbar when I am not using it and when I use it for my paddle board I can move the bars so that they will work with my board. My concern with this one is that when I have called the Ford dealer to sell this to me they do not want to since they say it is not meant for the Edge with the Panoramic Roof. I have gotten responses that the stress from the rails could hurt the integrity of the panoramic roof and that they do not want you carrying anything on the roof since it could break the roof. My question is if I were to install these myself, would it void the warranty I have on the car? Will the stress of the rails (by themself) hurt the integrity of the roof?

Custom (drilled in) rails and Crossbar

  • A local roof rack company has offered to create a custom rail where they would drill into the roof. I do not like this idea since I think it would probably void my warranty and could cause leaking on the interior.

What have you done and what do you think would be the best idea? I am leaning towards the OEM rails and Thule crossbar, but I am concerned about loosing the warranty I have on the car.

I truly appreciate your advice!!!

THANKS

J
