H&R SPORT SPRINGS ON G2 EDGE SPORT

Recommended Posts

My H&R Sport Springs Manufacturer Part # 28759-2 have arrived for my G2 Edge Sport AWD EcoBoost. I purchased them from the Tire Rack for $239 with free shipping, MSRP on these is $399. They arrived in good shape and on time. I have included photos of the unboxing. The weight was 6.4 pounds for each front spring and 12.4 pounds for each rear. H&R states on average they lower the front of the car 1.2” and lower the rear 1.6”. The springs are made in Germany and they were back ordered for a long time . They are now in stock at Tire Rack for those who are interested.

To set a base line I took some photos and measurements of the car while it is still stock. I measured the tire to wheel well opening. Stock clearance in front is 2 and 7/8 inch and the stock clearance in the rear is 3 and 3/4 inch. I did not use a micrometer to be exact, so I have included photos for your viewing pleasure.

On 5/20/2017 at 3:38 PM, always on edge said:

ETA: Do you need camber kit with these springs?

As I understand a camber kit is not needed. I will post more within 2 hours when the job is done, it is at the alignment shop now. Picking up the car @4:45pm West Coast Time.

no camber kit is needed, I bought the very first set for sale for the 2nd gen edge. Install is pretty simple, you can use a 2nd gen fusion how to. Just remember if you are doing it yourself to drop the rear subframe, it will cut time drastically. The drop is as advertised and my alignment a month later to allow for things to settle went very well

Now I will show you the H&R clearance so you can see the difference . Again these measurements are with a tape measure so it is not super accurate The front clearance is 1 and 1/2 inch that is a drop of around 1 and 3/8 inch. The rear clearance is 1 and 3/4 inch and that is a drop of around 2 inches. This is a bit lower than advertised, but not so low to cause any interference or look slammed to the ground. I think it is spot on.

And now for the money shot, the before and after. I was pleasantly surprised to find the ride a tiny bit softer than stock, so my fears of a harsh ride were unwarranted . I have not had much time with the new modification, so I will let you know how it handles one of my canyon runs soon. The cost to install and re-align was $400. The front install was easy, and the rears were a bit harder. I am sure that was not the best price ever, but it was not a rip off. So far I love the new look, ride quality and stance. H&R nailed it !

That looks amazing! I ordered mine tonight. Tire Rack shows a ship date of 5/23. I'll post pics of mine when it's done as well.

Thanks ! It is worth the wait. I had them installed the same day I got them.

I would have waited for alignment, you still have some settling to do. Also, sounds like your installer didn't drop the rear subframe. This turns the rears into about 30 mins a side. Curious to hear about the ride, Leo (037) is dropped on those same rims and he hated the ride, thus has switched to his 1/4 mile 20s from what I can see

Yes, I will have GAS - Galpin Auto Sports check the alignment after a few hundred miles. That was the plan from the beginning . I just did not want to hurt my tires for now. You are correct the installer did not drop the subframe. The rear springs were tough because they could not compress them, they tried external and internal compressors. A external and internal compressor from me and a internal and external from the shop not one of the four tried worked on the rear springs. Replacing the springs on the front struts was a piece of cake, and both were done well within 90 minutes. As far as I can tell the ride is more compliant, but it firms up quick over larger bumps and dips. We have speed humps here that I used for comparison and some choppy pavement. I can still hit the humps at the same speed as stock , when I go faster I can feel the stiffer part of the spring, but it is not that bad at all. It is as though for the first few inches of suspension travel it is just a very wee bit softer than stock, but after that it gets firm quick then outright stiff. They should give great hwy cruising, and with 21 inch rims I try to avoid potholes at all cost anyway. I have less than 20 miles on them so these are just my initial feelings, perhaps I will think different after I put a few thousand miles on them. They give a good quiet ride and in no way compromise the luxury ride and feel of the car and for sure they offer a vast improvement over the stock springs in how the car sits and looks. I will know about how they handle by Monday.

I've been on these springs for going on 3 months now, No complaints at all. It's a lot more sporty and exactly how the car should have been from the factory.

the 2nd gen ford fusion how to for lowering works perfectly for our edge, I totally forgot to drop the rear subframe on one side, took almost 5 hours. then remembered and the other side took 30 mins to swap that spring.

Just finished a canyon run to the beach and back. Wow what a difference the car handles so much better. The progressive H&R springs work great. The linear stock springs would compress in a corner then rebound upsetting the car, now the car settles in and holds the line much better there is less squat. The ride is firmer for sure but still feels equal to or just a tiny bit softer when just putting around on good roads. It is that progressive thing at work that gives the best of both worlds. Here is a photo of how the front splitter will still clear a parking lot stop bumper. No worries that it will hit or be too low.

What wheels do you have and how is the ride in general around town situations?

Hello Ray, I have the optional OEM 21 inch rims with OEM Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season 265-40 R 21 ..105V M&S tires. Around town the ride great It is equal to or just a tiny bit softer than stock for the first inch or two of travel then it progressively gets firmer then outright stiff. I feel as though there is less travel in the suspension . Overall the ride is firmer though. On speed humps I can barely tell the difference unless I go to fast. On speed bumps I can definitely tell that the the suspension is way firmer no mater the speed. In fact on speed bumps it feels outright hard. Because the H&R springs are progressive the ride depends on how much they are compressed. The stock springs are linear and have the same ride throughout their range. Hope this helps.

I am a bit embarrassed about the video as I was a bit sloppy cutting the line a couple times . Going over the line is definitely a no no. If you have to cut the lane to make the corner you are going to fast and it puts you and others in danger. Taking the line and using the apex is for the track not the street! Keep it in your lane ….
