Changed Oil Yesterday and Wife Getting Low Oil Msg and Engine Cutting Off

2012 Edge w/ 3.5L engine. Changed the oil and drove it a couple of miles yesterday the checked fill level and it was fine. I checked the driveway this morning and there was no oil at all under where the car was parked. My wife was driving to work this morning and after about 15 miles she has told me the "check oil" message is coming on and the Edge kept cutting off. She will have a friend at work check the oil and I will put the results on here, but I'm wondering what else I need to look at.

Ok...fellow at work checked oil level and thought it may be 1/2 qt low. Wife said the car would shake like it needed a tune-up and then cut off. and it had the 'Low Oil Pressure' msg. Anybody seen this before? And is the system designed to automatically shut off with the "Low Oil Pressure" msg?

You let the oil drain back for 15 min after engine shutoff and then checked? If there had been no physical symptoms, I would have attributed the message to erroneous programming in the cluster, there is a TSB out for that. You used 5W20 oil, right, not 5W30 or 10W30 (yes, people have done that before). Another problem that is common is double-gasketing in case the old oil filter gasket gets left behind. Check the EOP switch for leaks also, tho the issue started after the OC, it would seem to be related to either the oil or the filter.

Ford recommends 10W30 for Middle East Edge/MKX, so it should not give him a problem. I would suspect that the low oil pressure is the symptom not the cause. Due to the engine cutting, combined with the low oil level (1/2 quart as mentioned by OP), it is causing the oil pressure to be low & get the message on the display.

Good point Omar302...The oil thing may not be the cause. I'm starting to wonder about a fuel filter. She ran it a couple of blocks at lunch time and it died. started it and made it back to work. She let it idle about 10 minutes and no problem. Any thoughts anybody?

PerfA, how would the engine know its been filled with 10w-30 and not 5w-20? Is there a sensor in the car that can detect differences in the viscosity index? And while the spec is 5w-20 would running 10w-30 for 3-5k milez cause significant damage? I wouldn't do it regularly (I run 5w-20 Mobil-1 and a M1 filter) but methinks 10w-30 could not be that damaging in the short term? Could be wrong, tho.

My vague understanding of the purge system is that it will command the valve open and thus expect that amount of fuel to come into the engine, so it might compensate by reducing the demand from the injectors. If the purge valve was not functioning, that fuel wouldn't be there but the injectors would still shut off, so that would cause the hesitations/stalls. But usually that will throw a check engine light or code.

Does anybody know where the purge valve is on the 2012 Edge? I've been searching but can't pin it down. Searching the internet that is....the Edge is not here yet. Ok, nevermind found a good video showing just where it is.

Same place it is on previous model years, on the firewall. Follow macbwt's video on his channel to see

I would suggest you change back to 5W20 or 5W30 at the most. No reason really to tinker with Ford's recommendations in the United States. 10W30 is thicker than 5Wxx at ambient, most problems will manifest at startup in hard/rough starts though if the ambient is too low. Thicker oil does not flow as easily, and takes more time to build up oil pressure. And as you may know, 90% of wear happens at startup. Anyway, I do not want to oversimplify the understanding of how this works, so I would refer you to a great series of articles on, yes, BobIsTheOilGuy :) It is WELL worth the time to go through.

I will say that 10Wxx oils have better shear properties than their 5Wxx counterparts. But that is another discussion. If the purge valve replacement fixes all the issues being felt as of now, you might want to experiment with the 10W30 (i.e., leave it in there), and see how it works out for you. Orlando in spring/summer should have decent ambient temps at cold startup where 10W30 is ok-ish. My main concern then would be how the variable timing system copes with the 10W30.

I would suspect either the canister purge solenoid as Akirby pointed out, or the throttle body.

The oil low light is coming on because the enginge is stalling (and losing oil pressure). Probably not related the oil change, but you need to follow Ford's recommendations to maintain your warranty.

Purge valve is the issue. The Check oil light will come on when the engine dies and the key is on. Just a glitch in the programing that can be updated. Change the purge valve. Only takes a few minutes and you should be running good as new.

Ford Edges don't have traditional fuel filters, correct?

If by 'traditional' you mean the canister kind mounted along the frame rail, then yes, Edges do not have a traditional filter. It is integral to the fuel pump which is in the fuel tank itself. I think you have to drop the tank to get to it. Someone correct me on that if a tank drop is not necessary.

I believe you are correct. I do not know about the 2015+ MY years, but I would not think Ford would change this system after so many years.
