Sound check for 2nd gen. owners

Recommended Posts

This thread is aimed at those folks that changed out some of their OEM speakers but not all. I've changed out the center dash speaker and am now considering changing out either the front doors speakers or the rear doors speakers, but not both. I've read here on other threads that the Focal Performance 165's make a big improvement in the overall sound quality. I am wondering; 1) If you replaced door speakers w/ tweeters, did you replace all 8 @ one time or just 4 @ a time? 2) If you did only replace 4 which speakers / doors did you work on first and how did that sound? 3)If you didn't use FOCAL's which speaker did you use? How about a review on the sound quality of your ride with the upgraded speakers?

Hmmm. I did some frequency testing in my Sony 12 Speaker 2017 Edge Sport. My complaint is muddy bass. I discovered that there is a huge bleed over in the sub woofer, in that it is active all the way to 250hz ( it does drop in dB, and I have the data at home, but can't remember offhand)

Worse the door speakers are active below 70hz, which is bad at least for the OEM speakers

I disconnected the subwoofer and a lot of the muddyness went away. I almost was going to leave it disconnected, but then I was pushing the door speakers to hard. I am going to try a cheap fix and install an inline 70hz low pass filter on the sub and see how that sounds. This could be the poor man's fix.

Hi,

I'm still investigating passive crossovers, I found one at 80 hz with 12 dB/octave roll-off. I'll probably order that but it will be a few weeks before I get to install it.

Here are my measurements:

60 -6.3 70 -7.5 80 -6.5 90 -6.5 100 -9 110 -10 120 -11 130 -14 140 -17 150 -18 160 -18 170 -19.6 180 -20.7 190 -22.5 200 -21.1 210 -21.4 220 -23 230 -26.8 240 -33 250 -37.4 260 -29.4 270 -27.7 280 -25 290 -25 300 -27

I does seem to do a 12db/octave roll-off but then gets a little weird as well. I also just realized that the lower door speakers are considered woofers hence their low end response. Ultimately I think additional Low pass on the Subwoofer and better door woofers might be the trick...we'll see. I think the front door woofers are contributing to the muddy bass.

Oh ya, it appears the subwoofer is 1.2 ohms...making it tricky to find a passive LPF, parts express has 80hz at 4 ohms but that would be bad.

So I will keep searching.

I replaced the front and rear door tweeters and woofers. I disabled the useless (IMHO) surround sound feature. The system was sloppy, but my current setup sounds pretty good. I have not replaced the sub yet, but it is on my to do list. My rear set has built in crossovers. The fronts are crossed over from the OEM amp. I like it a lot.

Did you by chance do a sound check before you changed out the second replacement pair? In other words, if you replaced the front speakers (or back) first did you check out how the system sounded before changing out the second speaker set. If so, can you quantify the sound / imaging improvement?(I know that might be tough)
