Apex Posted July 13, 2017 Report Share Posted July 13, 2017 Hi everyone, First time posting. I have a really bizarre situation going on my Edge and can't figure out the problem. I have a 2013 Edge SEL AWD. Approximately 1 year ago, my Edge developed an unusual "popping" noise coming from the rear. I removed all the carpets, spare tire, etc and was able to pinpoint where the noise was coming from. It sounds like the metal from the chassis popping directly over where the suspension springs sit. Both sides are doing it when weight is being transferred on or off the rear of the car by turning, going on or off driveways and accelerating from a dead stop. I even had a friend under the car while putting my weight onto the back of the car and he could feel the popping noise when he would put his hand on the springs. What's interesting is, the noise goes away when it's raining or in the winter (living in Canada....it's cold) I had a mechanic check it out and guarantee it was the rear sway bar links. I was skeptical but changed them for Moog links but it didn't do anything. I also tried spraying graphite lubricant up into the springs but that didn't do anything either. I can do a lot of work myself, however, pulling the rear springs isn't something I want to do right now without knowing what the issue is. And it's not a job I'm really interested in doing myself. The noise is somewhat similar to the one in the first video but it obviously doesn't make the noise when turning the wheel since it's happening in the rear suspension. I don't think it's coming from the shocks. It's definitely coming from the springs. I guess the solution is to change part 7-8-9 on both sides? I say most likely because a] the springs rarely if ever give way (shocks go first), and b] you will know what's what once you get into it. Depending on mileage, it may be time to replace the shocks anyway if you replace these parts. Also check the nuts to ensure they are torqued down correctly. Might be as simple as that. macbwt Posted July 14, 2017 Report Share Posted July 14, 2017 I am not 100 percent certain but I would be willing to say you have loose shocks or the bushings on the shocks are worn or smashed. The springs are under a lot of tension but do not move in a twisting motion. There is really no ability for the springs to cause a noise. The shocks though have much more that can go wrong due to their complexity and mountings. If you have over 60K miles on the shocks it may be time to install a new set and see if this corrects the situation. I really don't think it's the shocks because the shocks are not mounted at the same spot as the springs and that's the source of the noise. Well, I thank you all for your input. I think I will roll it in the dealership on Monday for whatever it needs. Was hoping to get an alternative way to fix it. Apex Posted August 3, 2017 Author Report Share Posted August 3, 2017 Update: Took it to the dealership for diagnostic. The shop foreman looked at it and couldn't pin point exactly what the issue is but his first instinct would be to take apart the suspension mounting which is held by 4 bolts, I believe I got the right picture below, and see if there are any issues. Not really expensive for parts, just labor.
