High Beams Won't Turn Off

Hello,

 

This is a 2011 Edge Limited FYI. I just encountered an issue after replacing the GPS antenna which is behind the speedometer. The high beams wont turn off while driving, and stay on for about 15 minutes after I turn the car off. The multi function high beam switch does nothing, however the blinkers still work properly so I have ruled out that switch. I can't even get them to turn off by setting the lighting dial to the "off" or "low beam" position. I also checked the settings and made sure the lights are set to turn off as soon as I turn off the car. Anybody have any idea what could be causing this? I tried disconnecting the battery for ~30 minutes but that did nothing.

 

I have since pulled the high beam fuse so at least I wont be blinding people, but I still have all the same symptoms. 15 minutes of HIDs running uses a lot of power so I'm concerned I'm going to start walking out to a dead car fairly often. Any help appreciated!

Both headlights or just one. If just one I would have thought the shutter in that headlight had failed - new headlight needed. Could also be a faulty multifunction switch, has happened from time to time on the 2011-14 MYs. Easy DIY to replace. If both headlights are high-beaming, that probably is the culprit. Though without diagnostics, we could end up throwing parts at the problem.

 

I would take the steering column shroud off, take a close look at the MFS, clean it out, grease it if it looks otherwise ok. If you see burnt components, time to replace.

It is in fact both headlights. I had the steering column shroud off today and the MFS looked fine. Nothing burnt and still had grease oozing out of the ball socket. The turn signals still work fine and are operated by the same MFS, so do you think that would rule it out?

 

I've never noticed, but if you flip on your high beams then turn your car off, do the lights remain on? Obviously there's no way for me to check this with the car in its current state. If they do remain on, it is probably the MFS...

In a 2011, pulling the MFS halfway yields flash-to-pass, high beams remain on until MFS is released. In this case, with halogen headlights, I believe the high beams will remain on with engine off until the MFS is released. If the MFS is pulled all they way until an detent is reached, then high beams are switched on/off, in this case the high beams should turn off with engine off & headlamp delay is off or passed its duration.

 

If your MFS is bad, then it would be the first scenario above. I don't recall reading any similar problems. Also, this woudn't be the case if you have factory HID because they would only flash for ~1 second in flash-to-pass mode with the headlight switch off.

 

To test for above, you can just disconnect the MFS (remove it), this should release the Flash-to-pass function it is stuck.

Summary of how the lighting works (from 2014 FSM)

 

Pinpoint Test D: The High Beam(s) Are Always On

 

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 85 , Headlamps/Autolamps for schematic and connector information.

Normal Operation

The Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) monitors input from the multifunction switch. When the multifunction switch is placed in the FLASH-TO-PASS position (first detent when pulled towards the operator) or the headlamp switch is in the HEADLAMPS ON position and the multifunction switch is placed in the HIGH BEAM position (second detent), the SCCM sends a message over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) to the Body Control Module (BCM), indicating a flash-to-pass or high beam request. The BCM then provides voltage to the high beam shutters within the headlamp assemblies. The shutters are held in their normal (low beam) position by springs.

The multifunction switch returns to a rest position when released. The switch positions for the flash-to-pass and high beam features are momentary contact.

  • DTC B1007:09 (High-Beam Headlamp Switch: Component Failure) — a DTC that sets when the SCCM detects a fault from the multifunction switch input.
  • DTC B1D02:15 (Left High Beam Circuit: Circuit Short To Battery or Open) — a DTC that sets when the BCM detects a short to voltage from the LH high beam output circuit.
  • DTC B1D03:15 (Right High Beam Circuit: Circuit Short To Battery or Open) — a DTC that sets when the BCM detects a short to voltage from the RH high beam output circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Multifunction switch
  • SCCM
  • BCM
