How the Knock Detection System Works in the Ecoboost

Found this interesting. Amazing how complex this simple timing system has become.

In addition to the Knock system described, I also found the description of the Eco factory "catch can" system enlightening.

Interesting how the system catches blowby in the PVC system, even to the point of blocking the blowby under certain circumstances.

Should be noted that this system has evolved over time, it was not always like this, especially with blowby, from day 1. As an example, in the SHO, the cleanside PCV line in older MYs is much like that in our 3.5/3.7 systems, pretty simple. This changed around the 2015MY, IIRC, when they added a sensor to that line to monitor blowby.

The knock detection system lets you ride the lean edge of the curve, maximizing power AND economy. Have not known these sensors to fail yet. Many other things have gone wrong with the Ecoboost LOL, but not the sensors. And they WORK.
