2013 Ford Edge Sport - Cooling Fan Issues

Hi folks, got a query about the cooling fans after having an unsatisfactory experience at the local Ford garage.... they wanted to charge me 2500 AED (3.67-$/5-£) for a whole new fan unit, based on visual inspection that one of the fans was not working... details are follows:

  • Should both fans work at the same time? - Erm don't know
  • Is it a two stage system (second one kicks in when car gets two hot or one spools up) - Erm don't know
  • What diagnostics did you do - none
  • Why - from experience we just change, its a safety concern
  • Did you do a diagnostic test - no
  • Why not - not normally required
  • Why should I give you a large sum of money on this basis - erm....

You get the gist.... if its broken, no issues as its very hot here and my wife is too precious to kill for a few hundred quid.... however I work in power plant maintenance, so no convinced its as broken as they say. Asked them to do a full diagnostic examination and report back before I decide anything.

What I want to establish:

  • What is the logic? Both run and one speeds up? Or one kicks in at a different point?
  • What is the likelihood that the second fan simply has a broken connection / wire?
  • What is the likelihood that one of the fans is choked with dust/dirt/sand? (live in the UAE, do a lot of miles)
  • Are these units serviceable individually or is there a simpler fix?
  • Do we need to bend over and buy a whole unit?

Advice / experience / guidance welcome.... please let me know about the above. Cheers. :)

I am sure there is a lot of dirt intrusion not only into parts but electrical connections. worth having a look at/cleaning up & greasing the fan connections. costs little to get that done. If it works, hey, BONUS! Otherwise, replace fan assembly, keep the original control module with you though, especially if you go with aftermarket fans.

There might be ONE video on YouTube where they repair an Edge fan assembly. For the most part though, outright replacement IS standard.

The passengerside fan is the "primary" fan. It will run whenever the coolant temp exceeds approx 210F or so. The driverside fan is dedicated for use when the A/C is turned on. The fans are of the continuously variable variety.

One way to save your fans? Keep the coolant fresh. Fresh coolant = better passive cooling = less need for fans. Saves the water pump too!

Thanks guys.... so to confirm; the passenger side fan will only come on when it gets too hot (like all cars before boiling point) and the other one runs the whole time the AC is on?

It was the passenger side fan that they said was not working, or latterly working intermittently.... wasn't convinced at all and annoyed that I left work to go see them and they kept me hanging about for 1.5hrs, then couldn't give a decent answer one way other other. Its gone for diagnostic to see if any fault codes have been logged, because the weekend is Friday Saturday here, will find out more tomorrow.... either way going to take it away and test it myself. Sooner do that and check connector, blow out and grease the fan before shelling out the equivalent of £500 for a new unit.... will need that to pay for the tyres on the thing! :(

Do Ford or anyone else do a good online parts fiche so I can check the breakout of the parts and serviceable items?

There's a whole cluster of places which sell OE spares for various manufacturers in the industrial areas near all the garages in Mussafah, got to be worth a punt for connectors/leads if one is broken.

Being in the GCC, Ford vehicles are often programmed differently due to the different climate & regulations. Having a 2011 MKX (basicall an Edge Sport with more Luxury), I know that once the A/C is turned on, BOTH fans will run regardless of engine coolant temperature (at variable speeds based on temp & vehicle speed). One thing might be different between your Sport & my MKX, is that I have the factory Towing Package while no Edge Sport has it, the Towing Package gains a larger radiator & bigger or higher capacity fans, but then again, being in the GCC, maybe all Edges already have that additional cooling. One way to check is to see the engine compartment fuse box, with the Tow Package fuse# 39 is 40 amps & there is also another 40 amps fuse at #40. Without the tow package you get only a single 60 amp fuse at #39 (#40 would be empty).

But like what Mact & WWWPerfAZNOW stated above, 99% of the time you need a new fan assembly, and original MotorCraft is the way to go, and it only comes as a complete unit (both fans with the module & housing), but AED 2500 is high in my opinion. I purchased mine for QAR 1400 (1 QAR ~ 1.01 AED) and UAE prices are generally cheaper than here in Qatar, I had a chance to save ~ QAR200 if I was willing to buy it from a re-seller instead of directly from the Dealer, but I then would have to have waited another day and my was not derivable in the summer. But the benefit of a dealer install is easier warranty repair, I have been struggling with the dealer to get my replacement fan replaced under warranty due to fan vibration & they are still refusing to admit it is a defect.

And there you have it! :)

As far as parts, usually people in the GCC will get them from a local dealer OR they will pony up the customs/shipping fees and have them shipped from the US/Canada. Either way, not cheap :(

I use FordParts.com because I am in the U.S.A. Not sure there is a GCC equivalent site. They mainly seem to new car sales oriented and fluff material otherwise.

Thanks guys.... most helpful. 2500 AED is approximate.... that was including fitting at Ford and pre-discount, it was a little less but for easy counting. Interested in what CGG spec actually means in that regard.... the workshop manual I looked at had a separate section under drivetrain engine & emissions management which I couldn't open from the dealers tablet. Will have a look at the parts list for info.

Throw us the info if you get it.

By the way, I do regularly buy spares online from the US, mostly because in many cases it would still be cheaper than here, even with the extra shipping. Customs are usually exempt from personal items. In some cases I buy them because they are not available.

Diagnostic report done.... fan fault P0480 6C - failed to initialise in previous key cycles. New fan unit unless you strip the thing to bits yourself.... car front bumper to low to get under without a ramp.... take my credit card please. :(

Thanks for your help guys..... was still cheaper to do diagnostic with the service contract discount than replace without, so worth a roll of the dice.

Aye.... ~120,000km in our hands (141k km total) and its only cost us tyres and two batteries (they don't last well here)... albeit 4-off 22" Pirelli Scorpions! :(

No other issues so just got to bend over sometimes.... bill was 2330 AED including the diagnostic, would've been about 2900 without service contract discount.

Cheap in comparison to the timing belt service every 60-80k miles on my Pajero..... Tyres for it at least are half the price....
