Disappointed in H&R Springs G2 Edge Sport

Finished the install yesterday. They were fairly easy (except for the part where my top hat split in two, revealing the bearings inside, and the flat washer fell out and got covered in dirt and.... oh well nevermind)

 

After finishing i measured the drop. 1.1" in the rear (both sides). the front dropped 1.25 inches on the driver side, and .625" on the passenger side. at this point i wasn't sure if it is a quality control issue or what.

 

so this morning, i got back out there bright and early, pulled them out again, made sure everything was correct, and reinstalled.

 

same outcome. nothing seemed wrong after yesterdays test drive. no weird sounds/pops/creaks.

 

yes, they advertise "average" drop (1.2" front, 1.6" rear) but i'd say 1/2" less in the rear, and 50% less than advertised in the front isn't what i'd consider acceptable.

 

anyone else have similar results? Maybe i'm the dummy for purchasing these for "look" rather than "function"

Hi Mikula....sfbluenote here ( you sent me that killer video about Plasti dip) and Im about to do the H&R lowering thing on my 2017 Sport. Actually, Im going to have a shop do it because Im not that skilled mechanically..First I have to find a shop that I feel will do a good job.....I will stay in touch with you and let you know how mine turns out. From what I read here in the forums we have to wait some time for the springs to settle and then get an alignment. Should be interesting! Keep me in the loop as to how yours work out OK, Im off to buy some Plasti Dip Cheers, Alan

before you go, take measurements on all 4 corners from a few places. i measured from the lip of the rim to fender, and ground to fender.

 

also when you take it to the shop, be absolutely sure to tell the technician that in order to do the rear he must drop the rear subframe (one side at a time). a lot of installers don't realize this, and what would normally take 30 minutes per side, takes 4- 5 hours. i'd hate to see someone have to pay for that kind of labor!

 

better yet, just print him the instructions (thanks to snmjim) and give them to the guys doing the work. they can be found here:

This is odd. H&R is top quality and no one here has reported any issues with the quality of their springs. In fact, quite the opposite. I don't want to speak for any others with the springs installed, but the consensus I've read is that they're nothing short of amazing.

 

These springs are functional as well as appealing to the eye. Lowering the center of gravity on this hulking machine so as to improve aerodynamics, cornering (traction) and handling overall, without adversely affecting the ride quality is enough for many. Plus, the Edge Sport looks awesome lowered!

 

I know this post might read as an advertisement for H&R but I am quite satisfied with the springs. I'm sorry they're not working for you.

like nick said, they may need to settle, but i find it weird that they are so far off from one side to the other. I would assume they'll equally settle and still end up 3/4 off from each other when all is said and done. fingers crossed that they level out though.

 

and nick, tint those front windows fer christ sakes!

just been lazy and because I would have to peel it off once a year to get my safety inspection done. The audi, due to being new isn't required for inspection for 2 years and then I will be residing in Georgia instead of Hawaii. The Edge is getting the tint done here shortly though, 20% all the way around, even on top the factory tint. I just have a long list of others to do, change interior theme, black out top of of interior, finish this coilover development, 3in exhaust....etc etc...etc...

Great info here guys. Question: How long ( or how many miles ) after installing the H&R springs do i wait before getting an alignment? I just got a 4 Atturo AZ 850 tires,

so Im planning on waiting for the springs to settle and then do an alignment at the same time as the tires are mounted.

Mikula: Just read your post about reducing the weight on your edge prior to tracking it. That was some serious weight reduction! How was your Edge at the Track?

Nick, can you share any info on your coilover project? When you say black out the top of the interior, are you referring to the headliner?

coilovers, nope. but my rear shock is leaking, another member has had one completely fail. So H&R guys be prepared to tackle this. what sucks is there isn't a performance shock/strut combo on the market at all. Everything is OEM replacement specs.

 

interior, yes...goal is to have all the tanish color items black suede. Though the real question is, do I wait till I move to Georgia in like 9 months or start them here in Hawaii

only had 2 runs that day, messed up both runs. (one had traction control on, the other wasn't in sport mode) spun quite a bit out of the hole, track prep wasn't that great. had two guys ahead of me in line blow a diff, so waited in staging lanes an hour for each. anyway ended up 13.39. the slow mo video shows my tires blowing off on that run. i'm betting on that tune on better track 13.10 or so once i get my 60ft time down

Nick...Are you thinking that your rear shock leak is caused by the H&R springs?

I cant say it was the main cause. But since I know of one other member who has had them kn just as long as me has same issue. Im betting springs are result. Also I waited like 300 miles till my alignment

I will say that those numbers way different than what I got after my H&R's. The new springs actually evened out the car better than the stock springs. Both sides were within 1/4" of each other front and rear, and like most other people who put these springs in, the drop was slightly more than the 1.2" x 1.6" stated by H&R. The only advice I have is to make sure that when you measure, your car is parked on a very even/flat surface. Also, you will get the most accurate numbers if you measure from the center of the wheel hub or outer rim diameter up to the fender lip (if you aren't already measuring this way). Hopefully everything works out for you.

I can dig it. Hopefully something fruitful will come of your project that will be worth sharing. I went to an automotive interior shop and they quoted me $650 to pull the headliner and A pillar covers and dye it black.

 

I did it ages ago in a bimmer I was working on for a fraction of the cost. I'm going to look into it more when I get my new sport. (No time line in place just putting positive energy out there) With my luck if i did it now I would find the only buyer or dealer who hates it when its time to move her.

 

If there isn't anything else left for you to do while your in Hawaii You can do it. Or if your looking to save something to do for your first mod in Georgia, either way its up to you.

Mine is the 3rd case of rear shock failure on a gen-II Sport w/ H&R's. It has just under 13k miles on it, probably like 8k-9k of that with the lowering springs. Its leaking, hasn't failed completely, but I'm wondering if I should go with the KYB OEM spec version instead of the Motorcraft ones. They can't be any worse, maybe they will even hold up better. They are less that $50 each and the install is pretty simple if you have the tools.

yeah the rear is really simple to swap out. I'd say it's worth the trial and error to find out if it works better

what did you notice first when the shock started giving out? a noise? a bounce? or the leak?

So I'm trying to figure out why people are so disappointed in the springs when they do exactly as advertised.... lower the car and provide a better handling vehicle by way of using a stiffer spring rate and SLIGHTLY lowering the vehicle.

 

maybe someone can explain to me what I am missing....

 

I think it was only Mikula that was disappointed in them, and not in their performance, for some reason his ride height difference wasn't the same as everyone else's (it was less and also uneven). Everyone else seems to loves them, including me, I'm more concerned that my rear shock is leaking after 12k miles.

This is a normal thing that will eventually happen when putting stiffer springs with stock shocks. The stock shocks aren't engineered for for extra spring rate and usually blow out the seals eventually.
