Is Dex-Cool the right coolant for a 2013 MY 3.5?

My manual states WSS-M97B44-D2 and I recently did a coolant change (no flush, just drain and fill) with 2 gallons of Prestone Dex-Cool 50/50. The bottle says it meets WSS-M97B44-D without the 2.

Did I use the wrong coolant? Is the D2 a different spec?

2013 Edge 3.5 52k miles. Currently running Castrol Edge 5W20 Extended Performance and an FL500S. I'm an oil nerd and wondering if anyone else is too.

Thanks guys!

I run Mobil-1 5w20 Extended Performance Full Synth and a Mobil-1 M1-212 Extended Performance filter at 5k intervals, give or take. 5.5qts/5.2L with filter.

I've had good luck with Mobil-1 products on other vehicles so I saw no need to change.

Coolant is Motorcraft Specialty Green VC-10A2/WSS-M97B55A. Mind you, these are for my '11 AWD Limited. 11.7qts/11.1L.

The coolant you used should work fine. It is strange that on the Ford chemicals site, the concentrate is the D spec, the premix is D2 spec. Meh. Not to worry.

As far as oil goes, Motorcraft oil is good, just not as easy to get deals on as with aftermarket brands. Ultimately, it is about OCI. SOMEtimes, it's about the filter, can't go wrong with Motorcraft filters. There are certainly better aftermarket filters, as long as they don't cause startup rattle, you're good.

I'm an oil and coolant nerd too.

I think you did just fine with both the oil and the coolant.

The newest Edge come with Ford's version of the old Dexcool, and all the Dexcool are compatible* I've generally called these OAT coolants Dexclones. Most of the autoparts store green/gold are this type now, they switched quite a while ago to 'extended life' or 5 year 100k mile formulations. The coolant nerds like Peak Global lifetime coolant as the king of the Dexcool / Dexclone coolants.

IS all dexcool compatible? The owners guide for Model Year 2013 and 14  calls for WSS-M97B44-D2 not D.  I am also looking for clarification.  There are ford documents that state you can Use  D2 fluid where D is called for.   Nothing states that the reverse is true.   I found another document that states D2 is pre- diluted and D (proper) is undiluted.   My fear was D2/D compatibility was similar to the old Mercon vs Mercon V issue.  Where Mercon V could be used in all applications that Mercon (proper) was called for.

Dex-cool (the current version) is theoretically compatible with Motorcraft/Ford Orange.  Do you have the back label of this jug as well?  To see the specifications this coolant is compatible with.

Much preferred if you can get Peak, Prestone, Zerex branded universal extended life coolants instead.  What do you have available in your country?  Full flush recommended regardless of what coolant you go with.

I would have thought so, if it says it is WSS-M97B44-D. It would just need diluting with distilled water.

Thanks, this model is pre-mixed so no need to add water, here's the product:

Part # 88862645

I can't see anywhere on there that states it is equivalent to either WSS-M97B44-D or WSS-M97B44-D2.

I wouldn't use it.

FWIW, my local dealer told me they no longer stock any coolant other than the latest yellow.

. As my 09 came with gold, they did a full flush (he told me the procedure, seemed more than a simple rinse, used two different chemicals plus water flush). Had to be certain they got all of the old coolant out as it would cause a goo (my description) to form inside the system and clog the heater core.

Anyway, he said that Ford wants dealers to only carry the latest and switch over all older cars to New.

Personally I'd stick to Motorcraft. No advantage to using any other brand.

Anyone knows which car and build is Gold made for?

Gold was used starting in 2007 cars up through those built on or before  01/19/2009. On that date Ford/Lincoln switched to Dark Green.

If you have gold and are thinking of switching to a newer coolant, there is a specific flush procedure that MUST BE FOLLOWED.

And one part of the cooling system must be changed if your engine build date was built on or before 04/01/2008.

The part is the water pump inlet tube. The old style is painted on the inside and the flushing chemicals will dissolve the paint,  contaminating the cooling system and exposing bare steel to the coolant.
