2015 Titanium with 12,885 miles just dropped 3rd and 5th gear!

Well, my topic title says it all. We bought this Edge Titanium less than 3 months ago - used - with 9,800 miles. Very low miles for a 2015. It now has 12,885 miles. Purchased this because we make several Cleveland Clinic trips a year and for us its about a 4 hour drive one way. We wanted something comfortable and dependable to travel in. HAHA! Ill never feel safe in this again. Mechanic said he sees this a lot, however not with such low miles (well, I surely hope not). He went ahead and ordered the parts, however, Ford still has to approve the repair (still under warranty and they better approve it). I wanted a new transmission, but they said they can only fix the faulty parts.

 

So now Im pretty much in debt beyond my eye balls with this car and now with this issue, Im sure it will be reported to Car Fax. What does this mean to me? If and when I trade this beast, I will get screwed on any type of trade in offer. No longer a clean Car Fax. AND Ford will not give me a car to drive for the next 1 1/2 weeks (pretty sure it will be 2 weeks at least). And with another Cleveland Clinic trip almost upon us, I feel doomed. What a way to test new transmission parts better than to drive 8 hours in one day to Cleveland in the middle of January? Maybe Ill lose 1st, 2nd and 4th gear on the trip, woo hoo! Does anyone know if I have any recourse in this situation from the dealer I purchased it from?? Any advice is welcomed and thanks for letting me vent. Oh, did I mention it doesnt go into reverse either?

Wow, some serious issues, sorry to hear! Is this a 2.0EB or the 3.5? FWD or AWD? Does the issue happen when the engine is cold, or happens at any point? Has the trans fluid been checked for level, color, & condition? Could be an issue with the shifter/transmission range sensor also. Sometimes a PCM/TCM recalibration is all that is needed.

 

Do you know what parts your mechanic ordered? If you have a photo, please post it.

Sorry to hear about your trouble, these type of issues are always very frustrating. I'm surprised a dealer won't provide a loaner, it's not part of Ford's program, but my dealer provides one anyway. If it's under warranty, there is nothing to 'approve', it's broken, they fix it. I do not think this is a common issue with Ford transmissions, so I'm wondering about the mechanics 'sees this a lot' comment.

 

What difference does it make 2.0 or 3.5, FWD or AWD? It's the same transmission.

In fact it is not. 2.0EB uses a 6F35, 3.5 uses a 6F50. Though in the same family, they have their own unique issues. FWD or AWD because if there is PTU involvement it can manifest in a lot of ways, and the Gen 2 has already had its' share of PTU issues. This is a trend I have seen lately not just with the Edge but with the Taurus as well. Maybe the latest redesign did not take.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

 

Is that mechanic at a Ford service centre or an independent?

 

I haven't read about this type of problem being common with these vehicles, so interested to hear how that mechanic came to believe that.

It is the 3.5 with AWD. Yeah, transmission fluid was checked by mechanic and was fine. As far as when the issue happens, well, I’ve just had it 3 months and it just happened. Everything was good till all the sudden, I was driving it and my RPM’s went up (cause I was giving it gas) and it didn’t go into gear. At the stop light it would sputter a bit starting out (like it was trying to run out of gas - had a full tank) but then kick into gear, go thru second and I could feel the issue with 3rd. I really couldn’t feel the issue with 5th, but I drove is straight to the Ford dealership since it’s still under warranty. I knew it was the transmission and didn’t want to keep driving it. It is at licensed Ford dealer/service department. Idk if this has anything to do with it or not, but a VIN decode shows it was made in Canada.
