Transmission "sticky" in cold weather...any advice...?

My 2008 AWD Ford Edge appears to have "sticky" transmission in cold weather only. If car is standing outside in low temperatures for long period, the beginning of the ride is troubled with transmission not willing to shift to second gear revving up the RPMs. After period of a minute or so all resolves. It never happens in warm weather or even if car is standing in garage in winter. Any advice on what could cause that and whether there is is any simple remedy? Thanks for advice.

Cold weather is hard on transmissions because unless you use the transmission, it heats up pretty slowly compared to the engine. In the weather we have been having, it can take 10-15 minutes just to get the bypass valve to open!

So as mentioned by 1004ron, exchanging the trans fluid would be the first step to take. If you do not use Motorcraft Mercon V, I would suggest using Valvoline MultiVehicle Full Synthetic ATF. Frequency of service is probably more important though, not to exceed 5 yrs/60,000 miles between changes.
